How Kratos survived in 3. Secrets and Easter eggs of God of War - secret ending, pet squirrel, Thanos' glove from the Avengers and much more

Suddenly Gaia appears - while Kratos and Zeus were fighting in the gazebo, she decided to crush them along with the gazebo of the Gods. Zeus and Kratos jump inside Gaia, this is not the first time for Kratos. Kratos breaks the defenses around Gaea's heart, after which he and Zeus fight around it, with both Kratos and Zeus aiming to destroy her heart. In the end, Kratos manages to kill Zeus by literally driving him into the heart of Gaia with the Sword of Olympus, after which she dies. Kratos falls down. When he woke up, the spirit of Zeus appeared and almost killed Kratos.

At the dying moment, Kratos falls into oblivion and wanders through his own nightmares, from which Pandora’s voice helped him get out - she said that there is always hope, and it is hope that is Kratos’ main weapon. Kratos finds great strength in himself and finally kills Zeus. There was nothing left but chaos around, as most of the gods died. Athena appears and congratulates Kratos on his successful mission. She said that chaos has finally cleansed humanity, to which Kratos advises her to look back: there are no people left.

Athena demands that she return the power with which he was able to kill Zeus - hope. She once placed hope at the very bottom of Pandora's Box, under all misfortunes, as a force that would be the last chance. At first, Athena thought that the power that Kratos gained by opening the Box was evil, and hope remained inside the Box. When Kratos told her that the Box was empty, Athena realized that Kratos had received the power of hope, while the Box's evil had infected the gods of Olympus. Athena tells Kratos that only she can use this power for its intended purpose. But Kratos doesn’t think so - he revealed her intentions to gain power. He uttered the sacramental phrase “My revenge is complete” and pierced himself with the Sword of Olympus. Hope flows out of it like a blue fountain into the sky and spills onto the ground in the form of drops. Kratos decided to give it to future humanity rather than give it to Athena. Athena is furious - she did not expect such a turn of events. She pulls the Sword of Olympus from the bleeding Kratos and leaves. Kratos chokes on his own blood. After some time, the same place is shown, where Kratos is no longer there, and traces of blood lead to a cliff. Breathing can be heard for a few seconds, then stops.

Characters

Kratos (English voice: Terrence Carson, Russian voice: Sergei Chonishvili): former leader of the Spartan army, demigod who took the place God of War after killing Ares and, subsequently, a fallen god. Kratos is obsessed with revenge against Zeus for his betrayal.

Zeus (English voice: Corey Burton): Lord of Olympus, brother of Poseidon and Hades, father of Kratos - like many other Olympians. Zeus created the Sword of Olympus to win the Great War against the Titans. Originally an ally of Kratos, Zeus betrayed him by being infected with one of the evils of the world contained in the Spartan's Pandora's Box - fear; he was afraid of the continuation of the “father-killed-son” cycle (as he himself struck and imprisoned his father, Kronos).

Gaia (voiced by Susan Blakesley): Mother of the Titans and the Earth itself. Gaia helped Kratos, but in the end betrayed him, wanting to punish Zeus personally.

Athena (voiced by Eirin Thorpey): Goddess of wisdom. Athena was Kratos' ally and mentor for many years and fell at his hands in an attempt to protect Zeus. Returning as a more advanced life form existing on a “higher plane of existence,” Athena once again assisted Kratos.

Is no exception. Secret rooms and chests in it are by no means the only things you can find if you try. However, finding secrets is quite difficult, but this God of War guide will be your guide in this difficult task.

Secret ending

Before we get into the secret ending, we must warn you that there are major spoilers ahead. We recommend that you return to this part of the guide after you have completed the game and received the standard ending, and after that you can open the additional one, especially since it is not so difficult to do.

At the very end of the game we will see that the giants call Atreus by the name of Loki. This means that the son of Kratos is a very important link in Norse mythology, and perhaps he will be the main figure in the next games in the series. Or at least will be as important as Kratos himself is now.

At the end of the game, Kratos and Atreus will have a very private moment, after which they will return to Midgard as the credits slowly roll across the screen. Even though this is the main ending of the game, there is a bit more extra material to be gained.

Immediately after the end of the credits and Kratos and Atreus return home, you need to press “circle” on the gamepad to rest. This will trigger the final cutscene. In it we see Kratos and Atreus several years later, and suddenly lightning strikes their house! The God of War quickly runs outside and sees a mysterious figure with lightning striking around him.

When Kratos asks who the “guest” is, the hooded figure responds with silence. Instead, she throws back her cloak and we see the hammer. It is obvious that this is Thor. But that's where the scene ends.

Valkyrie Queen

When you fight against the Valkyries, you will learn that somewhere there must be their queen, because of whom they are now cursed. By defeating this queen, it will be revealed that there was another queen before her, thus opening up the opportunity to fight Freya herself, the previous queen of the Valkyries.

Squirrel pet

The squirrel can be found at the top of the Light Elf Outpost after you solve a few puzzles here. Opening the chest here will give you the ability to summon a squirrel known as Ratatoskr. It can be used to dig up health or rage stones depending on which arrows Atreus has selected.

Athena

Athena can be seen when Kratos finds his Blades of Chaos. She reminds him that he will always be the same Kratos, that is, the monster. This moment is also a reminder that the Greek gods are always watching over him, and they may return in future iterations of the series.

Prophecy

Towards the end, you learn that the long winter that came before Ragnarok has lasted for 100 years, and this happened because Kratos did not do something that was written about in the prophecy. This means that Kratos has existed outside of the prophecy ever since he defeated the Sisters of Fate in God of War 2.

References to the mythology of other cultures

You can also find references to the mythology of other cultures if you go to Odin's Chamber in Helheim. There are Greek, Celtic, Egyptian and Japanese symbols.

Horse

When Kratos tells Atreus the story about the horses, he is actually telling about his past. About how he was betrayed by Ares and how he defeated him, taking revenge.

E3 reference

In the debut trailer, a fire troll attacks Kratos and Atreus as they cross a bridge. However, there is no such moment in the game itself. On the bridge you will only find a few enemies. When they are finished, Kratos will say that he expected to see a troll under the bridge here. Quite a subtle hint, isn't it?

Reference to Avengers: Infinity War

God of War fans discovered a very cool reference to the movie Avengers: Infinity War in the game. Reddit user Moxxxxxi said that the game has all five infinity stones. The following points are references to each of them:

  • Andvari's Soul - Soul Stone
  • Njord's Temporal Stone - Time Stone
  • Eye of the Outer Realm - Space Stone
  • Ivaldi's Corrupted Mind - Mind Stone
  • Asgard's Shard of Existence - Reality Stone
  • Muspelheim Eye of Power - Stone of Power

What's more, there's even a Glove to store them all. By the grace of the dwarven merchant Sindri, the player receives a talisman called the Shattered Gauntlet. The description for this glove is a clear reference to Thanos' glove, and it reads as follows:

This ancient relic of Hel was once considered too powerful, broken into pieces and scattered across different worlds...

The gauntlet can only hold three stones at a time, but by inserting them, Kratos can shoot purple beams from his fists, and it looks awesome.

Captain of the ship

The ship's captain is a character who appears in many parts of the series. He swam into Hydra's mouth in the original God of War, back in God of War 2 and was mentioned in God of War 3. This time there is also a reference to it in the form of a Treasure Map quest called The Boat Captain’s Key. Here is his description:

When the captain perished in the belly of the hydra, his key went to me! I set off for new lands, but my ship crashed against the rocks and sank along with the precious key. Now it rests beneath the waves, impaled on the reef.

Players who have reached the end of the game believe that the adventures of Kratos and his son end at the top of the mountain. However, this is not quite true. There is another unwatched cutscene that is easy to see.

How to get the secret ending?

In fact, the ending is not that secret. After you see the first credits, head to Wildwood, to your house, and go to bed: you will see a cut-scene where Kratos and Atreus wake up from a storm that blows away the roof of their house. Horrified, father and son run outside, where a mysterious man in a dark cloak is waiting for them. Kratos tries to find out what kind of uninvited guest this is, but in response the man only demonstrates a hammer, from which a bunch of lightning emanates.

Thor?

Obviously, this was Thor, the father of those whom Kratos destroyed. Of course, he wants to take revenge for their murder. After the end credits, Atreus will tell his father that he had a strange dream. To this, Kratos will state: “It’s just knowledge, we have nothing to fear.” This ending is a typical teaser to intrigue the player and leave him with the question: “When will Kratos face Thor, and who will emerge victorious from this fight?”
