The mod also takes into account other features of the world. The coats of arms of the houses of Westeros and the genealogy of the Great Houses are carefully depicted, the world map is worked out, the climate of Westeros, the size and population of fortresses/cities are taken into account (for example, the Saltworks will never be larger than King's Landing), original titles and positions, etc.

The goal of the game, depending on the choice of faction, may be to capture certain lands, cities, or destroy a certain faction. Meanwhile, the conquerors are not asleep and are advancing from all sides - by sea and because of the ice - intending to subjugate Westeros, already drenched in blood.

The mod not only allows you to see and imagine what Westeros was like before the unification of the lands under the rule of the Iron Throne, but also makes it possible to understand what legends and what moments in history the characters talk about among themselves, albeit unobtrusively, but quite often.

A complete game changer. The mod completely copies the world of “Game of Thrones”: cities, areas, alliances and Houses of PLiO. The leaders do not have animations, but you will see their faces while talking with them - just like in the original Cilivization. And, of course, each enemy has their own unique tricks.

Do you want the most powerful navy? Well, first you have to outwit Balon Greyjoy and the warriors of the Iron Islands - unsurpassed sailors. They will generally outwit anyone, unless Khal Drogo and his Dothraki horde set foot on their lands. By the way, be prepared for Daenerys to send her dragons into battle, so it’s better to prevent their birth in the first place. Otherwise, you will have to rely on the Lord of the Valley, Petyr Baelish, an unsurpassed master in negotiations, alliances and betrayals.

Westeros - there is so much in this word... However, not for everyone. Fans and admirers of both George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series of novels and the Game of Thrones series do not need to explain what Westeros is. They themselves will teach whoever you want. But everyone else, that is, most likely, the overwhelming minority, needs to say a few words.
The A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy novels take place primarily on the fictional continent of Westeros—hence the word “much mixed and echoed.” The narrative is built on the confrontation between several feudal houses fighting for the crown of Westeros. Or more precisely, for the Iron Throne - a throne once forged from swords. The struggle is accompanied by behind-the-scenes intrigues, alliances and betrayals, open battles and secret murders. Everything is as it should be in a decent feudal society.
As for the surroundings, it is as close as possible to the Middle Ages we know. Knight's castles, tournaments, squires, beautiful knights and noble ladies. However, among the ladies there are persons who are not so noble, as well as knights who are moderately disgusting. There are not many fantasy features like magic and dragons here. Silent half-hints of witchcraft and rumors about dragons that died out hundreds of years ago. That's all the fabulousness. There is, however, still a small difference between that world and ours - surprisingly long periods of summer and winter, lasting ten years each.
Well, I don’t risk saying more - the fans may be offended, and those who are not in the know should better read the book themselves. Or, at worst, they’ll watch a movie. Why "at worst"? So the book is almost always better. Although I’ll tell you a secret, the book couldn’t even sink into my soul. All the more reason to turn to another product on a given topic - the “Westeros: Total War” mod for MTW2.


CLAIMERS TO THE THRONE
Let’s be clear right away: the mod is far from reaching the finish line; alpha version 0.53 is publicly available. Nevertheless, firstly, it is quite playable and stable, and secondly, it gives a complete picture of the main ideas of the mod. The strategic map is fully formed. The specific gameplay features dictated by the book are already in place. Only the factions are not fully developed. Mainly in terms of unique units. So, whoever can’t wait to personally deal with the bad Lannisters, or who are disgusted with the virtuous Starks, if you please, take up the sword and show them where the crayfish spend the winter in Westeros.
The developers didn’t need to invent a special map for the mod. The Internet is literally filled with both author's and fan maps of the mainland with detailed study of geography, landscape and relief. Even with calculated distances between cities. It is this generally accepted map that forms the basis of the mod. There are ten gaming factions scattered across it. Their starting positions are given at a time corresponding approximately to the second half of the first novel, at the time of the death of King Robert Baratheon, when Eddard Stark was unable to retain the throne, and King Joffrey reigned in King's Landing.
So, you can choose to play from the following factions:

They are scattered, as mentioned above, quite in accordance with the original. The Starks are in the far North (“Winter is Coming”), Stannis Baratheon is on Dragonstone, the Arryns are locked in the mountain gorges, King Joffrey is in King’s Landing. And so on. Already from the start, the factions are at war with their book antagonists. So Westeros is plunged into civil war right from the very beginning.
Let us note a few more specific features of the strategic mode of the Westeros: Total War mod. Firstly, the struggle is not to the death, but for the royal throne. What does it mean? This means that the winner will be the one who holds a certain number of provinces and becomes the only king on the mainland. What does “the only one” mean? It's very simple: each faction, if certain conditions are met (mainly by capturing key cities), can receive a royal title. so there can be several kings at the same time. And the player’s task is to knock out his opponents from the list of kings, limiting it to one special one - his own, of course.
The second surprise is the absence of spies. To be honest, it’s for the better. Giving the player a tool such as agents, a tool that the AI ​​practically does not know how to use, means giving him victory automatically. Even for murderers there is an interesting limitation. To get a killer, you need to conclude a contract with him. To be able to sign a contract, you need to build the appropriate guild. When the contract expires, the killer disappears again. This is as close to the assassins in the book as you can get.
The retinue of characters has also been brought into line with the original. As you know, in A Song of Ice and Fire, almost every self-respecting warrior had a personalized sword. These swords ended up in the retinue. There are also minor characters from the books here - knights, maesters, healers, advisers.

HE CAME FROM THE SEA
For the test, the brother of the late king Stannis Baratheon, who settled on the island, was quite suitable for me Dragonstone. On Dragonstone he can recruit his strongest troops. Here it should be noted, firstly, the fact that cities and castles in the mod are already developed from the start, which means that almost the entire set of units is immediately available for recruitment. It's nice. There is no need to develop long and boringly, sadly limiting yourself to peasants and militias, and when you develop to decent units, interest in the campaign has already faded. no, it's much more fun here.
Secondly, what kind of units are they? I said that they have not yet been worked out. For most factions, this is essentially a vanilla set - light infantry, heavy infantry, marksmen (archers and crossbowmen), light cavalry, knights, catapults, trebuchets. The parameters and in some places the names have already been changed, but the principle is still the same.
So, Stannis immediately lands on the mainland, taking advantage of the fact that the two coastal castles are without garrisons. Already from the start, Baratheon is opposed, in addition to King Joffrey, by the Lannisters, Renly, and the Tyrells. However, this is not important, since diplomacy in Total War, as you know, is, mmm... specific. But still, we fundamentally rejected the peace proposal from King Joffrey on the 3rd turn. Shish to him, this boy, not peace. Let him get off the Iron Throne.
Even having three castles, with half a stack of troops, I began to go into the red, since elite infantry and cavalry are not cheap here. Imperial knights devour 420 dragons (yes, money is called “dragons” here, as it should be) per turn per unit. Already on the fifth turn, the treasury went into minus by 1000 dragons. It’s good that you don’t need to build almost anything, since the castles are quite developed. The only thing that can be improved is the fields. I mean, arable land. With the same fifth move, we famously captured the first city of King Joffrey. The robbery replenished his thin wallet a little.
On our seventh move, we laid siege to a castle on the way to King's Landing. Joffrey cowardly refused to attack the besieging army, allowing us to take this key to his capital without much fuss. But it was not possible to move further - Joffrey concentrated in the Harbor and in the surrounding area one and a half stacks against our half-stack. It's scary though. It would still be possible to fight back, but to attack his elite... No, let’s not rush. Let's save money and troops.
On the 12th move we occupied the Rebel town near the mouth of the famous Trident. Here we got the border with the Tullys and Arryns. It’s interesting whether the AI ​​will break down or will still maintain the book’s balance. Looking ahead, I will say: the AI ​​did not fail, did not fall into “total war”. As befits the plot of the novel, the Arryns and Tullys treated Baratheon tolerantly, abandoning themselves to the war with the Lannisters.
Only by the 19th move was it possible to assemble a stack of troops with which it would not be a shame to appear in public. We laid siege to King's Landing with a stack of elite fighters inside. There is no point in storming. Even the AI ​​will fight back here. After all, Harbor is the most developed city with walls of crazy size and strong towers. One hope is that King Joffrey will not leave the capital in trouble and will give a field battle, where the AI ​​is practically doomed.
I don’t know, I don’t know whether Joffrey would have willingly given battle at the walls of King’s Landing, or whether he would have abandoned the city to its fate. But in any case, he did not have such an opportunity, because the Martells attacked the king’s lands, driving the royal stack somewhere to the periphery. Lord Stannis had to besiege the city until the victorious end, which came on the 28th move.
In principle, the plunder of the Harbor would have given 32 thousand dragons, but we did not now betray our capital to fire and flame. Moreover, the untouched city gave a net income of up to 5 thousand per turn - money problems were a thing of the past forever.


KING STANNIS
And then the scripts were thrown out. From the start of the campaign, the victory condition was the capture of 15 provinces plus the retention of Dragonstone. With the capture of King's Landing, Stannis is declared king, and the condition of victory is the retention of 25 provinces, including King's Landing and Dragonstone. And even strangle the rest of the kingdoms. Their list can be clarified in the agents' scroll. There is such a special agent (physically he sits on the island without the ability to move), whose characteristics list all the houses that have achieved the royal title.

If the colors and icons of Stannis's units are more reminiscent of vanilla Danes, then the Martells are associated with the Arabs. They had a predilection for dismounted spearmen - very unwise when you are fighting against Stannis, who prefers dismounted knights.
Sitting under siege is no fun, so we rushed out for a sortie. The first stack-on-stack battle of the campaign took place. And the first serious contact with the RealCombat system implemented in the mod. For those who don't know, this is a combat system that simulates the confrontation between heavily armed warriors of the Middle Ages. Heavy armor – high defense parameter and small attack parameter. The result is a rather protracted hand-to-hand fight, which gives time for various tactical tricks on the battlefield. Detours, ambushes, flanking - this is much more interesting to fight than a five-minute wall-to-wall fight.
After the victory and upgrading the armor of the troops (King's Landing has the most developed forge), Stannis's army moved south, deep into the Martell possessions. Victories followed one after another, fortresses fell like ripe apples. On the 40th move, we were attacked by our southeastern neighbors - Renly (the colors of the vanilla Spaniards), but defeated in a couple of defensive battles, they also rolled south.
In general, the further campaign boiled down to rolling down opponents no different from vanilla. Considering that the treasury was practically not transferred and I could support as many troops as I wanted, this is no longer of any particular interest for description.

INSTALLATION
The mod is designed for MTW2 Kingdoms 1.5. Installation is automatic. Just run the executable and specify the path to the folder with Medival. The mod is launched either by an installed shortcut from the desktop, or by a bat file in the mod folder.
