Constellations and signs of the Zodiac.

Twelve thirty-degree segments of the celestial sphere, dividing it by latitude. In other words, the signs of the zodiac are areas of the sky based on equal thirty-degree segments of the ecliptic. The names of the signs come from the names of the twelve corresponding zodiacal constellations, in which the Sun is alternately located in its annual movement.

In Western astrology, the starting point is considered to be the vernal equinox. Due to precession, the signs of the zodiac for more than two thousand years have lost their correspondence with the constellations in the sky and now have the meaning of only sectors of the ecliptic relative to the starting point, measuring coordinates. The vernal equinox point is the beginning of the sign Aries in Western astrology.

Astrology believes that the fate and character of a person are connected with his horoscope, and it is important what signs the celestial bodies were in at his birth. The sign in which the Sun was located at the time of a person’s birth is called his “solar” or simply “sign”.

However, there is a rather simple earthly explanation. As we know before birth, a person is in the womb. And her well-being is affected by seasonal changes - nutrition, the ratio of day/night duration, ambient temperature, the amount of clothing worn, fasting for believers, etc., the tidal influence of the Moon, we can continue further... Associations involuntarily arise with the place of birth: in Moscow one weather, another in Vladivostok, another in Murmansk.

People and Zodiac Signs.

The European School of Astrology is used and applied on this page.

a - Zodiac sign - Aries.

A person born under the zodiac sign - Aries - is ambitious, perky, irritable and stubborn. He does not give in well to the will of others, and the desire to insist on his own can turn into despotism. Strong will knows no limit, and the heat of passion knows no boundaries, the active mind pushes forward, without fear of obstacles.

b - Zodiac sign - Taurus.

Taurus - achieves victory thanks to unusual patience and hard work. He does not give up on his plans, is very persistent, inquisitive and fair. Rarely listens to advice and can suddenly act ahead. It is difficult to unsettle him, but he does not forget insults, his anger is long-lasting. Strong will, affectionate and conservative in his views.

c - Zodiac sign - Gemini.

Gemini is the most changeable sign of the Zodiac. People born under this constellation often have a literary gift, are intellectual, write easily and acquire a variety of skills. They are charming, easily win, love to flirt, but family life is a burden for them. The apparent contradictions of their nature are illusory; they simply cannot stand monotony.

d - Zodiac sign - Cancer.

Cancer is faithful and devoted in family life and love, sensitive and easily vulnerable. In the family they find self-expression and comfort; they prefer to give more than to take. They are reliable and honest in their work. They do not like innovations, have heightened intuition, follow many conventions, reaching the point of mysticism, but hide it because they do not like to stand out from the crowd.

e - Zodiac sign - Leo.

Of course, not everyone is called to rule the world and the empire, but those born under the sign of Leo have greatest chance to leadership. Leos are called upon not only to rule, but also to love. They are deeply unhappy if they are not bowed down to. They are noble and kind, sincere in their motives. The world is a huge stage for Leos, and they are often endowed with dramatic talents.

f - Zodiac sign - Virgo.

Virgo is capable of thinking logically, values erudition, has an analytical mind, is observant, and has diverse interests. Virgo's creed: If something is worth doing, then do it well. Many people of this sign achieve high results in everything, because... the criterion of significance is excessively high, constantly striving for perfection.

g - Zodiac sign - Libra.

The lives of people born under the sign of Libra are governed by a sense of justice, beauty and harmony, they are responsible, and have good business qualities. Thanks to tact, balance and generosity, they are always surrounded by people. These people have a strong influence on others and rarely have enemies.

The ram, the bull, the heavenly twins,
And next the crab, the lion shines,
The virgin and the scales
The scorpion, archer, and the goat,
The man who holds the watering-pot,
And fish with glittering scales.

Isaac Watts, 1674-1748

(let it be translated like this)

behind them the cancer and the lion shine
here is a maiden and behind her are scales
two hemispheres separate
there is Scorpio, Sagittarius, and here
a shaggy ibex swims
the hero spilled water in the tub
in it the fish rustle with their gills

Zodiac constellations- these are the constellations through which the sun passed at the time when the concept of the zodiac was formed. There are twelve of them.

Sometimes they say - and this is almost correct - that the zodiacal constellations are those through which ecliptic(the annual path of the sun across the sky). The ecliptic spans the sky like the equator spans the Earth, so zodiac constellations- this is simply the traditional historical name for a group of twelve constellations, a strip covering the entire sky.

Zodiac constellations are named exactly the same as Zodiac signs, there is a deep genetic connection between them, but constellations and signs are completely different objects! They are different in essence, but most importantly, they differ in their position in the sky. Because of this confusion (in the minds of both astronomers and astrologers), misunderstandings and misunderstandings constantly arise.

Please don't be confused zodiac constellations with zodiac signs!

I mentioned that the ecliptic passes through the zodiacal constellations, but this is not entirely true. The fact is that in ancient times the shape of the constellations was somewhat different; the modern form of the constellation was adopted only in the 20th century. Therefore, from about this time, the ecliptic began to cross the constellation Ophiuchus. However, Ophiuchus do not include to the zodiac constellations. Astrologers (and astronomers) who consider Ophiuchus to be a zodiac constellation know nothing about astronomy or their own craft! Ophiuchus wedges itself into the zodiac sequence between Sagittarius and Scorpio.

By analogy with signs (and we remember that zodiac constellations and zodiac signs are different things), corresponding symbolic icons are assigned to the zodiac constellations, which, however, are not used at all by astronomers. In this table, the constellations are distributed according to celestial hemispheres and seasons in accordance with tradition, and not at all from the real astronomical state of affairs.

So, the ecliptic (and in place with it the zodiacal constellations) covers the sky like the equator covering the Earth. (There is also a celestial equator, but more on that elsewhere.) Just like on the earth’s equator, a coordinate system can be constructed on the ecliptic. This system of ecliptic coordinates was indeed used and can be seen in ancient atlases. Even the coordinates in the sky are called in this system similarly to geographical ones: latitude and longitude.

Bright stars in the sky form characteristic figures. Such clusters are called constellations. People always look at the stars for a long time, trying to unravel the mystery of their cosmic origin. They want to find among the constellations those that they once read or heard about. Twelve of the celestial figures are constellations of zodiac symbols. Each of them is associated with legends that tell about its discovery and explain its name. What are these zodiac signs?

The zodiac is a certain belt of the sky along which some planets, the Moon and the Sun move, passing 12 constellations on their way. Since they are located in the zodiac field, they got their name - the constellations of the zodiac. Each of them in old astrology was designated or accompanied by a certain symbol, which is called the zodiac symbol. Here is a simple story of how the constellations of zodiac symbols appeared.

How many are there in total?

The sun travels around a large circle of the celestial sphere in a year. This circle (called the zodiac, 360 degrees in total) is divided into 12 sectors of 30 degrees each, named after the constellations that the Sun passes on its way.

Each month corresponds to the zodiac symbol along which the Sun makes its movement in that month. Once upon a time, the constellations of zodiac symbols served people as a calendar, since the Sun traveled in each of them for about a month. But since the point of the spring equinox constantly moves (every 70 years by 1°), the Sun these days, within one month, moves not through one, but through two adjacent constellations, but the designations that previously existed for months have been preserved. The Sun travels through the constellation Virgo for the longest time - 44 days, and the Sun travels through the constellation Scorpio in 6 days. In fairness, you need to see that the Sun, between November 30 and December 18, passes another cluster of stars - Ophiuchus, but it just so happened historically that it did not get a month, and it was not included in the constellation of zodiac symbols.

Origin of names

People have come up with their own name for each constellation of zodiac symbols. According to one version, the origin of the names of the zodiac symbols corresponds to the labors of Hercules. Other versions are based on ancient Greek myths about the gods of Olympus. Each name and sign has its own legend. It is curious that, despite the ancient Greek origin, all the names of the zodiac symbols have been written in Latin since time immemorial.

Today, astronomers name 12 zodiac symbols, united by 4 elements:

  • earth - Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo;
  • waters - Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces;
  • fire - Aries, Leo, Sagittarius;
  • air - Libra, Aquarius, Gemini.

According to mystical teachings, the signs of the zodiac - constellations in the sky - endow people born under them (that is, during the month when the Sun passes a certain constellation) with certain character traits.

Aries constellation

The first spring months - March and April (21.03 - 20.04) - correspond to the zodiac symbol Aries. The constellation Aries consists of 20 stars. Mesartim, Sharatan, Gamal are the three brightest stars of Aries. About 2000 years ago, the location of the vernal equinox was in Aries. According to astrologers, she will not return here soon, but after a long 24,000 years.

One of the myths tells how Aries saves Phrixus and Gella, two children who, at the behest of the evil stepmother Ino, must be sacrificed. The fate of the kids turned out differently, but the memory of the golden fleece lamb was forever preserved by the starry sky.

Constellation Taurus

Taurus (April 21 - May 21) is a very noticeable constellation; an attentive observer will see up to 130 of its stars, 14 of them are visible especially clearly. The brightest are Aldebaran, Nat and the star Alcyone and Zeta Tauri. The summer solstice point is located in this constellation.

According to one legend, Taurus is identified with Zeus. He took on this image to kidnap Europa, the daughter of the Phoenician king.

Twins

In the constellation Gemini you can see about 70 stars, two of which - Castor and Pollux - are the brightest. The exorbitant brotherly love of Castor and Pollux, which ancient Greek myths tell about, prompted people to find two shining celestial stars and call them Gemini. The symbol corresponds to May and June (22.05 - 21.06).

Constellation Cancer

The summer months - June and July (22.06 - 23.07) - correspond to the zodiac symbol Cancer. The constellation Cancer is very huge and at the same time the weakest, it is lost against the background of its bright neighbors and brothers Leo and Gemini. In good weather at night you can see about 60 stars in the constellation without telescopic instruments. The brightest is Altarf or Beta Cancri.

Legend associates the appearance of this constellation in the sky with the name of Hercules’ irreconcilable rival Hera; it was she who lifted there the sea monster that bit Hercules during the battle with Hydra. Although according to legend it was not a cancer, but a crab, astrologers liked the first name more.

Constellation Leo

The next symbol of the zodiac is named after the constellation Leo (July, August). The constellation Leo is the brightest in the zodiac family. Its largest star is called Regulus, which means king. The constellation is also curious because in November, once every 33 years, you can see star showers of a meteorite shower in it.

The mythological Nemean lion (with which the appearance of the constellation is associated), born of the half-woman, half-snake Echidna, was able to defeat the illegitimate son of Zeus, Hercules. And the majestic Thunderer immortalized his son’s victory, lifting the defeated monster to heaven.

Constellation Virgo

Virgo is a huge cluster of stars in the zodiac, 164 of its stars are visible without a telescope or spyglass. The brightest is Spica. In our era, the autumnal equinox is located in the constellation Virgo. The zodiac symbol corresponds to August and September.

Numerous legends connect Virgo with either Rhea, the mother of Zeus, or Themis, or Gaia, the earth mother.

Constellation Libra

Libra - the months of September and October. Once upon a time, its constituent stars were part of the constellation Scorpio, but, moving away, they later formed a new constellation. The origin of the constellation is associated with the daughter of Zeus Astraea, who, without getting tired, walked the earth, assessing the unjust and fair deeds of people with the help of scales.

It consists of 83 stars, the brightest of which are Zuben el Shemali and Zuben el Genubi.

Scorpion

Scorpio has also found its place among the zodiac symbols. This is southern zodiac constellation- one of the brightest in the sky, it has 17 stars, the brightest of which is Antares.

As the myths tell, Scorpio, who fatally stung the young hunter Orion, settled next to him forever in the heavens. This zodiac symbol corresponds to October and November.

Sagittarius

Sagittarius (months November and December) is the brightest cluster of stars. 115 stars of the constellation will appear before the attentive gaze of the observer, of which 14 stars are very bright, the championship is held by Alnazl, Albaldakh, Kaus Borealis, Kaus Meridianalis, Askella, Nunki and Kaus Australis.

This is a very fascinating part of the sky. There are three nebulae, the center of the galaxy and a supermassive black hole. The constellation Sagittarius is the winter solstice point.

Sagittarius is the image of the mighty mythological centaur, forever rushing across the sky.

Capricorn

The zodiac symbol Capricorn corresponds to December and January. Without telescopic equipment, 86 stars of this cluster can be seen. Beta Capricorn is the brightest of all.

There are many legends about this constellation. Ancient Greek mythology says that Capricorn was the son of Hermes. He, horrified by the hundred-headed Titan, rushed into the sea. After which his appearance changed greatly, he turned into a goat with a fish tail. The gods were surprised by the sight of the monster and took him to heaven.

Aquarius

Aquarius (months January and February) is another huge cluster of stars on the solar path, with seven stars being the brightest. Aquarius is easily visible at night between August and October. Closer to the 2nd half of summer, active meteorite showers can be observed in the constellation. Aquarius is also known for the fact that it contains the huge Helix Nebula, which is closest to Earth. According to old legends, the name of the constellation means “master of the waters.”

Fish

The zodiac sign Pisces corresponds to February and March. The largest star in the constellation is Alrisha. There are 75 visible stars in the cluster. This is the point of the spring equinox.

According to mythological legends, fish are lovers Akid and Galatea. Pursued by the Cyclops Polyphemus, who was in love with Galatea, they, in order not to be separated, rushed into the depths of the sea and were swallowed up by it. The gods took the lovers to heaven and gave them endless life in the constellation Pisces.

The constellations of the zodiac signs are twelve thirty-degree segments of the celestial sphere, dividing it by latitude. In other words, the zodiac signs are areas of the sky limited by equal thirty-degree segments of the ecliptic. It is the constellations of the zodiac, in which the Sun is alternately located during its annual movement, that give names to the signs that form the basis of the zodiac horoscope. It seems that there is no point in explaining how many constellations there are in the zodiac, since there are exactly the same number of them as there are the signs themselves, the sectors of the zodiac - 12.

Western astrology takes the day of the spring equinox as the starting point for the zodiac horoscope. For the same reason, Aries is first constellation in the zodiac and stands at the beginning of the horoscope; Aries comes into force precisely on the day of the spring equinox. Due to precession, the zodiac horoscope of all signs of the zodiac, its signs over more than a thousand years of history have practically ceased to correspond to their constellations in the sky; today they are associated rather with the sectors of the ecliptic and zodiac. Modern astrology suggests that in many ways a person’s character and destiny depend on his horoscope, on the zodiac sign under which he was born. The sign in the period in which a person was born is called the “solar” or simply the zodiac sign.

Constellations of the zodiac signs of spring.

First on the list is Aries, or simply the ram. Historically, and for astronomical reasons, it turned out that the order of the zodiac constellations does not change after years and even millennia, so we will follow the generally accepted list.

So, Aries (ram) is one of the most noticeable, brightest constellations in the horoscope. The Latin name of the zodiac sign constellation is Aries. Its three main stars form an obtuse triangle, which is not difficult to find in the sky. It is located south of the constellations Perseus and Triangulum, north of the head of Cetus, so do not be confused. Constellations of the zodiac signs Although they are not numerous for obvious reasons, they all include a considerable number of stars. The name of the brightest star in the constellation Aries is Gamal, which translated from Arabic means “grown-up lamb.” Almost all constellations related to the zodiac occupy a vast area of the sky. Thus, Aries is located on an area of 441.4 square degrees (the number of stars visible to the naked eye in this area is 82).

Sumerian astronomers referred to this constellation as the “ram constellation.” It is obvious that this particular ram is the golden fleece that saved Gella and Phrixus from their stepmother, the goddess Ino. According to legend, Aries went to heaven after he was sacrificed, and his skin was presented as a gift to King Eetus. What’s interesting is that all constellations of the zodiac signs, without exception, have myths that interpret their appearance in the heavens.

Historically, the name “Aries” is believed to have been proposed by the ancient Greek astronomer Cleostratus. In general, many constellations, and not only the zodiac ones, received their modern names precisely in ancient Greece. Today, the constellation Aries is included in the catalog of the starry sky of Claudius Ptolemy.

The second in the list of “constellations of zodiac signs” is Taurus. The Latin name of the constellation is Taurus. This is a striking and beautiful cluster of stars, located between Aries and Gemini, in the northwest of Orion. In the sky, Taurus covers an area of about 797.2 square degrees and contains 216 visible stars. According to myths, in the sky we see the name Taurus, a white bull on which Europe swam across the sea, eventually ending up with Zeus on the island of Crete.

The constellations of the zodiac signs include at least one bright star, in the constellation Taurus it is the Eye of the Ox or Aldebaran in Arabic, which means “following the trail”. This name has its own explanation; the constellation Taurus moves behind the Pleiades, a beautiful cluster of stars consisting of almost 300 stars located at a distance of 420 light years from Earth. In addition, numerous stars of the Hyades cluster are scattered around the main star of Taurus; according to myths, the Hyades are the sisters of the Pleiades. There are about 200 stars in the Hyades, some of which are especially bright because they are located, by astronomical standards, not far from the earth at a distance of 132 light years. By the way, among all the constellations of zodiac signs, Taurus has one of the richest mythologies; more than one or even two legends are associated with this constellation.

No less remarkable element of Taurus than its mythology is the remnant of the explosion of supernova M1, located within its boundaries, located in the Milky Way galaxy, and had a magnitude of 8.4 magnitudes.

The name of the third constellation of zodiac signs is Gemini, which translated into Latin is Gemini. This is a constellation whose outline really resembles the figures of two people. The stars Pollux and Castor are the heads of twins whose bodies descend towards the Milky Way, bordering Orion. The Sumerians called this zodiacal cluster of stars the “Great Twins,” and it had the same name in Babylon. The names of the brightest stars of Gemini were given by the ancient Greeks in honor of the sons of Zeus. Gemini in the sky occupies a vast area of 513.8 degrees and contains a total of 121 one visible stars.

The main stars of this constellation of zodiac signs have long been named by Greek letters in descending order, for this reason Castor is often called Alpha Gemini, despite the fact that Pollux shines much brighter these days. Here one of two things, either Pollux began to shine brighter, or Castor has weakened over the past centuries.

By the way, Castor is a visual triple system, and both bright components in it are spectrally double, while the third is a hidden double. Therefore, Castor is not just a star, but rather a cluster of six stars located nearby. How many constellations are in the zodiac, so many mysteries. The total magnitude of Castor's stars is 1.59, and the distance from the Sun is 45 light years. Pollux, on the other hand, boasts a magnitude of 1.16 stars and a distance of 35 light years from the Sun.

Summer zodiac constellations.

The first in the list of summer constellations and the fourth in order in the horoscope is Cancer, in Latin - Cancer. Perhaps the most inconspicuous constellation in the horoscope. No other constellation of the zodiac is as dim as Cancer: it can only be seen on the brightest night in the area of the sky between Gemini and Leo. The area occupied by the zodiac constellation Cancer is 505.9 square degrees. The constellation contains 102 visible stars.

According to legend, Hercules crushed a crayfish during his battle with Hydra, after which Juno took him to the sky as a constellation. The Arabic name for this cluster of stars, the constellation of the zodiac signs in the sky, is Akubens, which means “claw.” Cancer bore exactly the same name in ancient Babylon.

In the area of Cancer, the constellation of the zodiac, there are two known open clusters of stars. One of them is Manger, M44 in astronomy textbooks, visible in the sky as a nebulous spot just west of the line connecting the central stars of Cancer. According to astronomers, this cluster contains 203 stars located at a distance of 572 light years from us. The second cluster is M67, located two degrees from Cancer. It consists of more than 500 stars located at an average distance of 2600 light years from the Sun.

The second summer constellation of the zodiac is Leo, located between Virgo and Cancer. Latin name - Leo. This is one of the largest clusters of the zodiac: Leo covers an area of 947 square degrees and contains 122 stars that are easily found in the sky. The constellation was discovered by the Sumerians about 5 thousand years ago; the original name for this cluster of stars was also given by the Sumerians. According to myths, the Lion is a Nemean monster that was once defeated by Hercules and later appeared in the night sky.

The outline of this zodiac constellation vaguely resembles a lion lying at ease in the night sky. Its head is the Sickle asterism, famous among astronomers, with a bright star at the bottom. This star is Regulus, which translates as “king”. Regula's light is approximately 165 times more powerful than the sun, and its brightness reaches 1.36 magnitudes. Regulus, the brightest star in the constellation Leo, is relatively close to Earth at a distance of 84 light years. The second brightest star is located in the western part of Leo, its name is Denebola, which is translated from Arabic as “lion’s tail”. The zodiac constellation Leo is associated with many myths and ancient tales, most of which relate to the mythology of ancient Greece and in particular to the adventures of Hercules, the son of Zeus.

The Zodiac passes through 13 constellations, but the Zodiac circle is divided into 12 equal parts, unlike the constellations. Each part is one Zodiac Sign, the name of which is given depending on the location of the corresponding zodiac constellation in this part of the sky.

The movement of all planets follows the Zodiac Signs. Full circle signs of the Zodiac gives us 1 YEAR. The earth is in the center.

The main property is activity. Common features of the signs of the cardinal cross: action, activity, perseverance, desire, desire and ability to influence the environment; hence the desire for change. Energy is directed from the center to the outside.

Negative traits: selfishness, dissatisfaction, irritability. These properties are dictated by excess energy. These people love a fight, a duel. They always go forward to fight, it lights them up and gives them pleasure. Victory can be caused by movement, military action, or a challenge to a duel. But the result does not always give victory. There are other factors involved as well.

People born under cardinal signs are active, energetic and prone to change; gas, after all, also generates energy and easily spreads in all directions, almost unrestrained by gravity. Cardinal sign people create paths for others to follow and begin things that others complete. Aries natives bravely embark on daring undertakings and adventures. Cancer natives are blazing new trails in the housing and food industries. Libras become innovators in the fields of literature, art and social activities, while Capricorns become pioneers in business and industry. Signs of cardinal quality produce INNOVATORS.

Fixed cross.

The basis of this cross is constancy. The main quality is courage. Common features: People of this cross excel in defense. The product of their efforts in the form of a positive result is endurance, patience, waiting. This man is a fortress. They endure not because of weak will and cowardice, but because of masculinity. They are characterized by constancy, perseverance, but also steadfastness in the event of an attack. They can give a brilliant rebuff (depending on the sign). They have great efficiency, reliability, and unbending will. Realization of energy depending on efforts in any area.

Negative traits: self-confidence, conservatism, stubbornness, excessive pride, which is expressed in self-will and wilfulness. Also inertia, dislike of change, power, authoritarianism, despotism.

Under the signs of fixed quality, quite adamant, decisive and persistent people are born. Solids are difficult to change shape or location; in the same way, people of fixed quality are deeply attached to the familiar environment, the usual manner of performing professional duties and the usual style of thinking. They have enormous strength to resist any external pressure, are resilient and patient, are distinguished by perseverance and perseverance, and delve into details. They are not innovators or energetic developers, but when development reaches its climax, they refine details and make improvements. Signs of fixed quality give rise to IMPROVERS.

Movable cross.

It includes the following signs: | | |

The main quality is changeability. General traits: mobility, complaisance, flexibility, diplomacy, courtesy, sociability, talkativeness. These signs are endowed with flexibility of perception. This is a very valuable quality that gives them the ability to quickly adapt to change. They have the ability to find unconventional solutions. These signs don't need a fight. They are strong in originality, resourcefulness, negotiations, because they are mobile and ambivalent.

Negative traits: talkativeness, narcissism, selfishness, conceit. Basically, there is a desire to talk only about yourself. The duality of these signs is based on a combination of fixity and cardinality, which results in constancy of movement.

Mutable signs are golden mean between the crazy activity of the cardinal signs and the stubborn resistance of the fixed ones. Liquid cannot flow through the gap as easily as gas, but if the channel is continued for it, it will quickly flow along the line of least resistance. People born under mutable signs are rarely pioneers and innovators, but easily follow in their footsteps. Just as a liquid easily takes the shape of the vessel in which it is located, so mutable people easily adapt to new surroundings and strangers. Signs of mutable quality rarely produce pioneers and innovators. These are mainly DEVELOPERS.
