The toy was released for Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360 back in 2009. Despite being five years old, Left 4 Dead 2 is quite popular game and is worth the attention of every fan of the genre.

The plot is banal. As always, thanks to some unknown virus that causes rabies and various types of mutations in people, an epidemic has engulfed humanity.

Some were able to escape and evacuate, but a group of four lucky people either couldn’t get on the rescue helicopter in time, or simply decided to enjoy all the delights of the zombie apocalypse.

So, four survivors, immune from the infection, wander through the world of zombies in the hope of finding a way to salvation. Who are they?

Characters - heroes of Left 4 Dead 2

  1. Trainer(Coach) is such a healthy guy, a 44-year-old African American, a former football team defender, a school physical education teacher, in short, a physical education teacher.
  2. Nick(Nick) is a 35-year-old man who traveled playing cards for a living.
  3. Rochelle(Rochelle) - 29-year-old black girl - journalist, maybe just a chocolate.
  4. Ellis(Ellis) is a 23-year-old boy who worked in a car repair shop before the apocalypse.

God knows what, nevertheless, you need to survive and stay in a group - this is the best option for confronting the infected. By the way, all campaigns in Left 4 Dead 2 and game modes, the heroes will go through together.

Infected people are zombies from Left 4 Dead 2

Now it's time to remember about the infected or zombies. They can be divided into two types:

  1. Common Infected
  2. Special Infected

Among all this beauty, one can highlight rare common infected: clowns and special forces. You will be able to meet them only in some campaigns.

How to behave so as not to become a victim? Some tips.

  • Beware of the Spitter slime. The longer you stay in it, the more damage you will take.
  • The Brute can knock down the entire team. Once he grabs you, he will beat you until he kills you. Don’t stand on the edge of a precipice or bridge; if you see a thug, hide.
  • The tank is the most durable, so as soon as it appears in your field of vision, try to focus your firepower on it. Molotov cocktails, gas cylinders and gasoline cans are effective weapons against a tank.
  • It’s better not to disturb the witch at all. One touch to the character and he will lie on the ground.
  • The smoker has a long tongue, grabs a target at a distance of several meters and drags it towards itself. You will have 2 seconds to kill him before he grabs you with his tongue.

Left 4 Dead 2 Game Modes

For varied gameplay, the developers have given us several game modes.

  • Campaign – a game played in a cooperative campaign online.
  • Mutation is the last person on earth, you will become a legend for the infected as the last person...
  • Realism - when a real apocalypse comes, you can only rely on your comrades.
  • Battle – playing for survivors or infected zombies in online battle mode.
  • Combat: Realism– you cannot see each other, but they see you.
  • Survival – play in survival mode - try to survive as long as possible.
  • The Gathering is a multi-round competitive event.
  • One player – a game for one player offline with other players under computer control.

It is worth highlighting the mode - campaigns. The entire game and plot are built on this mode. The campaign can be played as a single player, with bots in a team, or in co-op mode.

Companies in Left 4 Dead 2

- the basis of the gameplay in Left 4 Dead. As for campaigns, there are several of them in the game. Each campaign is divided into several parts - chapters. So you can start either from the beginning or from a specific chapter.

Chapter 1. Dead Center

Our heroes appear on the roof of the hotel - this is the very moment when they fail to escape by helicopter.

Having escaped from the burning hotel, the four head to the shopping center, hoping to find an evacuation point.

There are no survivors at the site, all personnel are dead.

Looking for gasoline for a racing car. The next solution is the path to New Orleans.

Chapter 2. The Passing

A broken raised bridge blocked the way for our heroes, they were forced to get out of the car.

In an attempt to reach the bridge and launch it, four brave men descend into the dungeon.

Searching for fuel, refueling the bridge generator.

Chapter 3. Dark Carnival

Huge traffic jam, no way to get through.

Through an amusement park, through crowds of zombies.

With a breeze on the rides.

The survivors are looking for the way to the concert venue.

Charity concert for zombies. Helicopter signal.

Chapter 4. Swamp Fever

Boardwalk backyards

Our heroes did not manage to fly far. As it turned out, the helicopter pilot was infected. They did not stand on ceremony with him for long and shot him.

Swamp

It’s very wet and there are a lot of zombies, nothing can be done, you need to move on.

Slum

There is another small town on the way. Some local village.

Plantation

Finally, the survivors find the plantation, and they radio the ferryman.

Chapter 5. Hard Rain

The fifth campaign takes place in a coastal city. The boat the survivors were on ran out of fuel. We land on land in search of fuel.

The path ran through a sugar factory. Unfortunately, the heroes did not find any snacks or sugar. But the fuel problem was solved.

Having filled the canisters with fuel, our characters return, meanwhile the weather worsens.

The city is flooded, apparently the water brought with it a couple of hundred more zombies.

Escape from the city

The survivors, waist-deep in water, make their way to the pier, having given a signal, a boat arrives.

Chapter 6. The Parish

The ferryman delivers the four to New Orleans and sails off to save other people. Now the task is to find the evacuation point, which was organized by the military.

It’s not clear why the zombie park attracted us... We pass it, killing a couple of fat men and 5 dozen Walking Dead. A few more hundred meters, we run across the bridge and see the cemetery.

The atmosphere here is appropriate. The dead run around the crypts, jumping from one to another. One thing that was disappointing was that there weren’t those same hands coming out of the ground like in classic horror films.

After running through the cemetery, the characters will find themselves in a beautiful and cozy quarter, but at the very end they will find trouble. It is necessary to turn on the tractor so that it moves the bridge to the opposite balcony of the building. They are coming...

A huge dilapidated bridge, our heroes need to run to the other side, where a military helicopter is waiting for them.

That's all for campaigns directly related to the plot of Left 4 Dead 2. Below we will tell you another one, in our opinion no less interesting than those described above.

Additional Campaign – Cold Stream

The four survivors found themselves in a mountainous area, and the decision was made to go downstream of the river.

Beautiful landscapes and forest guardhouses, in one of them the heroes met a crowd of zombies.

Upon reaching the bridge, the characters also encounter many angry zombies. (The traffic jams must have driven people crazy).

Another narrow stream has been passed and there is a certain base where a rescue helicopter is waiting for the survivors.

As well as campaigns from the first part of the game. Developers continue to release various add-ons, add-ons and patches for Left 4 Dead 2.

On the official developer blog you can find Custom Campaigns:

  • Evil Eyes
  • Detour Ahead
  • City 17
  • One 4 Nine
  • Suicide Blitz 2

Achievement system

Left 4 Dead 2 has a system of achievements, about 70, but the achievements earned in the game do not in any way affect game process. However, you can track your achievements on the Steam website.

Left 4 Dead 2 – weapons

Finally we came to one of the most interesting details of such games - weapons.

  • Several types of shotguns
  • Rifles and machine guns
  • Several types of pistols
  • Submachine gun 2 pieces
  • M60 grenade launcher and machine gun

Throwing weapons

Compared to the first part of Left 4 Dead, the new one has items that improve weapons - laser sights and 2 types of cartridges (explosive and incendiary).

Frying pan, baseball bat, rounders bat!, fire axe, baton, golf club, chainsaw, guitar, machete, crowbar.

A pair of stationary machine guns were also found.

Other items included cans of gasoline, gas and other flammable cylinders - all of this can be taken with you and exploded anywhere.

Regarding treatment and some bonus points:

Game trailer, Left 4 Dead gameplay

Well, if you doubt whether the game is worth your money or your time, check out the trailer and gameplay from Left 4 dead 2.

Video: game trailer

At some points, the number of zombies running towards you begins to go off scale, and in an attempt to fight off the crowd, you begin to randomly click on all types of weapons and click the mouse.

Video: gameplay of the game

The atmosphere and graphics in the game are amazing, for some reason it reminded me of the good old Resident Evil, the same one that was on the first PlayStation.

Sea of blood, pieces of flesh flying in different sides, inhuman squeals, screams and moans. Will the four survivors be able to make it to salvation?

Left 4 Dead Survivors

Left 4 Dead offers players four (hence the 4 in the game's title) characters to choose from. In the early stages of the game's development, it was planned that the selection of characters would be random, but in the final version, players can choose any character they like, if they were not previously chosen by one of the players.

Francis, Bill, Zoe and Louis are among the few who are immune to the infection. And some of the few who were able to survive this apocalypse.

You can also observe “invisible people” as companies pass by. Such as a helicopter pilot, a crazy priest, a ship captain...

An attractive girl who comes from a wealthy family. At the same time, an experienced fighter. She is strong and knows how to stand up for herself even in the face of danger.

She spent most of her free time during her freshman year of college in her dorm, watching old horror films. After which she was given a choice: either quit fooling around and continue studying, or quit studying.

Now that the entire planet is overrun by deadly zombies and all her professors have died, Zoe has little consolation that she was taught the right things after all.

Bill
An old veteran of the Vietnam War, an experienced warrior (as evidenced by his beret. He served in the US Army Special Forces. After two unforgettable trips to Vietnam, he was left with a handful of medals, a knee full of shrapnel, and an honorable retirement.

Being older and more experienced, he can still outmatch you in hand-to-hand combat. Rumor has it that he knew Francis before this whole mess.

Now that an army of infected dead has declared war on humanity, after decades of aimless and stupid work, Bill is finally lucky again to do what he has always dreamed of: fighting the enemy.

Francis
A strong and strong-willed biker, covered in tattoos. Rude and harsh, which, however, does not prevent him from being a good guy who you can always rely on.

Francis acts as if the zombiecalypse is the world's biggest bar brawl. When the virus infection began, while everyone was looking for food supplies and a place to hide, Francis found a cannon and began to have fun.

There are no police, no laws, no order - if not for zombies, he would even like such a life.

Louis
Louis was about to leave his company as a junior systems analyst in the IT department when the virus arrived and decimated the world's population.

The only person on the team who is trying to maintain the remnants of civilization in a world plunged into complete chaos.

His well-fitting clothes, as well as small details such as signature boots, a tie, and an expensive watch, not only set him apart from the other members of the team, but also give players an idea of who Louis was before the disaster.

However, now Louis has a whole bunch of new life goals (to live long enough) and new means to achieve these goals (weapons and sharp objects). He was lucky enough to quickly understand how the new rulers of the Earth worked, and how to act so that they did not have the opportunity to kill him.

It is a cooperative first-person shooter. The game was released on November 17, 2009 in the US, and November 20 in the UK and EU, and is a separate sequel Left 4 Dead available for Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows.

As in the original version of the game, all actions take place during a period of global chaos, which occurred as a result of the leak of a virus that turns people into zombies. The main focus falls on four people who are immune to the virus and their battles with infected hordes of zombies. The main characters must pass through levels that are separated by shelters, which are fortified and sheltered rooms that act as control points that no type of “infected” can enter. The final goal of the game is to reach the location of the rescue transport at the end of the campaign. The script is changed through artificial intelligence - the Director - who tirelessly monitors all the actions of the characters. The second part is marked by the addition of new weapons, close combat capabilities and new types of infected. The storyline that connects all five campaigns together is quite interesting.

Game Features

· New story, new dialogues, new Survivors;
· Three new bosses - zombies: Jockey, Spitter and Brute, as well as new types of ordinary zombies;
· New types of weapons: 10 melee units and 10 firearms;
· Two new game modes: “Realism” and “Collection”, in which you need to collect canisters within a certain time;
· Five new campaigns that connect storyline, each of which contains zombies not used in other campaigns;
· A new version of the artificial intelligence system (Director), which is capable of changing music, weather and types of zombies;
· Improved multiplayer system.

Campaigns

The main plot of the game is the struggle of the four surviving characters against infected people - zombies, who have become the predominant part of the population of the entire planet. The game is connected by one storyline and includes five campaigns. The main events of the campaigns take place in the United States, in its southern part. It all starts in the city of Savannah and ends in New Orleans. In each campaign, there are several maps that are separated by shelters where previously completed levels are saved.

Campaign names:
· Dead Center;
· Dark Carnival;
· Swamp Fever;
· Hard Rain;
· The Parish.

Game process

Like the first version of the game, it is a first-person shooter in which team action comes to the fore. The game features new campaigns that are many times longer in length than their predecessors. It is possible to complete campaigns in five modes: Skirmish, Co-op, Survival and two new modes: Collection and Realism.

Game mode Collection

This mode is played in equal compositions of four players on each team: Infected versus Survivors. The main goal of the survivors is to search for 16 fuel cans that are scattered in all corners game card, after finding which ones should fill the generator tank, as a result of which victory is awarded. True, there is a certain time limit for filling the tank. The stage begins in a safe zone, where the "Survivors" are surrounded by a white aura. Before any action begins, they are given one minute to get ready. After the end of the collection time or when leaving the zone, the countdown of game time begins. After this, the team is given one more minute. Each canister found and poured into the generator tank adds 20 bonus seconds. Initially, in the lobby you can choose the number of rounds in the game from one, three or five. If the team does not manage to fill the generator tank within the allotted time, the total number of canisters will begin to be counted. To win the round you need to collect at least one canister more than your enemy. Important point: if, if time runs out, the Survivor is holding a canister in his hand, then the game continues until he throws it or brings it to the target and refueles the generator. If at the end of counting the total number of canisters there is a tie, the winner is determined by calculating the total collection time: whoever collected the fastest is the winner.
The four “Infected” are trying with all their might to defeat their enemies and start the generator. In addition to ordinary zombies, special infected ones can also knock canisters out of the hands of Survivors: Bruiser, Jockey, Smoker and Hunter. The Spitter's special poisonous saliva destroys the canisters, but after some time the canisters return to their original places.
“Survivors” are required to monitor the shots, since any bullet can damage the canister, which can affect the final result.

Characters

Four new characters appear: Nick, Ellis, Coach, Rochelle.

Trainer
A six-foot black man who played quarterback for his college football team, with big plans for the future that were derailed by a knee injury. Because of this, he is just an ordinary physical education teacher at school. Now he is 44 years old and is far from in the best shape, and since the reign of the virus throughout the world, he does not say his name and cannot do without chocolate.

Rochelle
A 29-year-old black girl whose main dream is to get on television, but the dream is not destined to come true, although she even graduates from college in the desired specialty, but only gets a job at a small, little-known cable channel. And then she is sent to report on the breakthrough of Atlanta, to Savannah, it seems that her career is beginning to take off, but no, new circumstances appear in which she is forced to fight not for her career, but for her life, hand in hand with Nick, Coach and Ellis.

Ellis
Most, having seen what was happening on Earth, would not have been able to stand it. But this doesn't apply to Ellis. At 23, he is confident and fearless. He was born here and feels like a duck to water here. He is brash and belligerent and it is a difficult question of who should be afraid of whom, since Ellis can fight back against anyone. He is good-natured and often recalls funny stories from his life.

Nick
A 35-year-old criminal drifter for whom Georgia was just another stop. Having won several jackpots in local casinos, Nick did not notice how Georgia pulled him in. Finally, having come to his senses in Savannah, he remembered that he was here temporarily, but what would happen in the future, and how long he had left to live in this infected world was unknown.

Common Infected
Just ordinary people who were exposed to the virus. In terms of strength and health reserves, they are approximately similar to those of ordinary people. If you don't touch them, they wander around the streets, just stand or sit still and fight among themselves. But as soon as you shine an under-barrel flashlight on them or find yourself in the pheromones of Fat Man’s mucus, the player may be in serious trouble; whole crowds of infected may flock to the light and loud sound, which develop into Hordes.

New types of special “infected” in:

Bruiser
A huge “infected”, with an almost atrophied left arm and a hypertrophied right one, who can easily break any ranks of Survivors with a running start. Having grabbed someone, he runs with him to the first wall he comes across and there he drives him into the ground. If the grapple fails, the Brute begins to strike numerous times with his powerful arm.

spittoon
It has the same health reserve as ordinary infected people; the main danger is the scattered saliva, which causes significant damage and can grow into a small puddle in a few seconds. After the death of the Spitter, the slime scatters around her and remains on the ground. To avoid unnecessary losses vitality you can simply bypass it, without unnecessary damage.

Jockey
This type of “infected” tries to jump on the Survivor, after which it begins to control his movements. The “Survivor” is only 30 percent able to resist the Jockey. Gradually, the “Survivor” is dealt damage, which increases every second. It is extremely difficult to kill him, since the Jockey is difficult to hit due to his too small size.

Walking Witch
The main characteristic of the Walking Witch is that she does not tolerate sunlight, when the light hits her skin, she experiences pain. At levels where there is sun, it does not sit, but constantly moves. The Walking Witch is not like her predecessor; she is distinguished by strong aggression. The “survivors” are attacked by her as soon as they come into her sight.

Achievement system

In , as well as in many other games that interact with Steamworks, there is an achievement system. Now there are 50 of them. Achievements also do not affect the passage or the entire gameplay. Achievements are scored exclusively in the console version of the game.

The Passing

In the spring of 2010, a new addition to “Transition” is planned to be released. This addition will tell about the four Survivors, who are heading south, together with the heroes of the second part.
The Passage will begin in suburban Georgia, where the Survivors of L4D2 meet the characters L4D.
"The Passing" is planned to be one of the most important campaigns in all of history Left 4 Dead, in which we will all have the opportunity to see all the Survivors at the same time.

Georgia was just another stop in this drifter's life. In any case, it would be much better there than in another cheap bar. Sensing an easy catch, Nick pulled out all he could from the poker games at the local casinos. He didn't plan to spend the rest of his life in Savannah, but the zombie calypse interfered with his plans, and now who knows how stuck he will be here?

Nick is one of the four Survivors in Left 4 Dead 2, voiced by Hugh Dillon. Full name: Nicholas, 35 years old. He is an avid gambler and a cunning swindler who wears an expensive suit. Nick joined the trio in search of salvation, but still cannot decide for himself whether to trust them (which is against all his instincts), and constantly compares them with the Coward, the Goonie and the Seasoned (in the original - with the characters from the comedy The Three Stooges ). Despite the zombie calypse, he is constantly trying to find benefit from what happened, however, over time, he begins to appreciate his partners more and more.

Many players see Nick as an analogue of businessman Louis from the original four;

When Nick says, "Shoot me again I"m not dead yet," the line is a reference to the Metallica song "Shoot Me Again," in which lead singer James Hetfield sings : "Shoot me again I ain"t dead yet";

When Nick says: " Are you really going to shoot a guy in a $10,000 suit? Come on!" ("Are you really going to shoot a guy in a $10,000 suit? Come on!"), this phrase is a reference to the character George Oscar Bluth from the American TV series "Arrested Development", who constantly boasted about the expensiveness of his suit. For example, : “Well, yeah, a guy in a $25,000 suit will carry heavy weights? Come on!";

Nick bears a striking resemblance to the character Tom Vercetti from Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, who in turn was based on Al Pacino's Tony Montana from Scarface;

Just like Zoey and Louis, Nick stands next to Rochelle in all of the game's campaign posters;

According to the game's trailer and demonstrated gameplay, Nick's favorite melee weapon is a frying pan;

Nick is the only Survivor in Left 4 Dead 2 whose appearance has not changed from the very beginning.

Ellis is a simple-minded but not stupid guy who loves beer and tinkering with cars. His friends just call him Al.

Most of them shit their pants in this zombie calypse. But not Ellis - his indestructibility is not in doubt, as is the fact that he is 23 years old and absolutely immune. We can say that Savannah's son respects his mother, loves his job and is happy with what he has. And he is bold enough to show who needs to be scared here - him or the infected.

Many players see Ellis as an analogue of the biker Francis from the original Four. Like Francis, he comments on everything that happens. Plus he has a tattoo on his right arm. However, in character he is much more similar to Louis;

Designers changed several times appearance Ellis, starting with a green cap and blue jeans, ending with a white and blue NASCAR cap and mechanic's work pants with a tool belt. In the teaser shown at E3, he wore a T-shirt with two crossed flags and the words "J.B. Autoservice" underneath, apparently his work T-shirt. Another yellow T-shirt could be seen in the game video of the Gloomy Carnival campaign, and the pants were again replaced with jeans. The most recent videos showed Ellis wearing a "Bull-Shifters" T-shirt. Judging by the demo version, this version of Ellis is the final version;

In the trailer, Ellis strapped on a huge number of weapons that you cannot carry with you in the game;

In the trailer, Ellis was the target of all the Special Infected shown there;

Ellis and Rochelle are the only survivors of Left 4 Dead 2 that had versions shown in screenshots or videos but not featured on posters. In the case of Ellis, these are early screenshots where he has a white T-shirt, a green cap and jeans.

A former high school football coach who quit teaching after suffering a work-related knee injury. After this, the Coach took up lighter sports, becoming a flabby fitness trainer. The zombiecalypse forced him to monitor his health, and not his students. Originally from Savannah, Georgia, she has a knack for dealing with children and their parents. He was voiced by an actor from the series The Wire.

Chet Faliszek once mentioned that the Trainer "has a terrible hatred for zombies, especially the Witch", although he did not specify why.

Many players see the Trainer as an analogue of Bill from the original four;

If both characters' backstories are to be believed, both Bill and Coach had knee injuries;

The coach is very similar to Uncle Phil, a character from the TV series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air;

The former trainer has a slight diction defect, especially noticeable when he swallows R and G. This may be due to his Southern accent;

The coach is religious and comments on what is happening referring to the Bible. The game's first trailer also mentioned that the last time he saw his grandmother, she asked if he was still praying;

His words - “Even if I walk through the valley of the shadow of death” - a quote from the Bible (Ps. 22:4);

PC Gamer magazine showed initial sketches of the Coach, including: a skinny coach, a white coach, a coach using football pads as armor. He also held a bow and arrows;

It is possible that the Trainer's favorite weapon will be the AK-47, because... In two campaign posters he is holding this exact weapon.

Rochelle - originally from Cleveland, 26 years old. She loves communication and that’s why she went into journalism. Her friends call her Ro. For her success, she was promoted and sent to Savannah, the site of the first campaign, to write an article about the strange things that began to happen in the town.

The outbreak of the epidemic in Atlanta gave her a chance to more actively develop her career. She was sent to the evacuation center to cover the events, but the ensuing chaos disrupted all plans. However, Rochelle is not the kind of person who will resign herself and wait for death. She found a weapon and teamed up with other Survivors. Her T-shirt has the Depeche Mode logo on it.

Rochelle is voiced by Rochelle Aytes.

Many players see Rochelle as an analogue of Zoey from the original four;

The game's designers changed its appearance several times. In the trailer, she was wearing an orange T-shirt, but now it is pink. Her hair changed color from brown to black, and the girl herself became a little shorter. Also, her hairstyle became a little shorter; before, her hair was tied up in a long ponytail, but now it’s in a neat bun;

Rochelle has a slight French accent, which may have some connection to The Parish campaign;

Just like Zoey and Louis, Rochelle stands next to Nick in all of the game's campaign posters;

In the Death Shop campaign poster, Rochelle is holding a chainsaw and a katana in both hands. This will not happen in the game; according to Chet Falizek, the ability to use two weapons at the same time was removed after several tests.

Infected

Bruiser

The Brute is the Infected, demolishing everything in its path. When attacking, it makes a sound similar to a donkey's cry. Its purpose is to scatter groups of Survivors in bottlenecks. Moving at the speed of the Survivors, he can instantly accelerate for a short time. However, after accelerating, the Brute moves and turns slowly. He is not as strong as a Tank, but can still deal about half the damage of a Tank with a boost. Also, the Brute is not very maneuverable, so it is easy to dodge him.

When he grabs a Survivor in his huge hand, he deals 15 points of damage per hit. Capture occurs if the Survivor was pressed against a wall or other “solid” surface. Outwardly, the Brute is a large Infected, reaching the height of the Tank, but twice as wide. The mutation affected him in a rather strange way: one hand tripled in size and turned into a kind of grip; the other had shrunk to a completely useless appendage. The Brute is dressed in something resembling the blue overalls of farmers from the southern American states.

Early concept art shows Brute as a large zombie with a very small head and Tyrannosaurus Rex-like arms;

Initially, the Brute would immediately stop after capturing a Survivor;

At Comic Con, Brute made zombie noises from Ravenholm. In addition, some of his screams are remixes of the sounds of a zombie carrying poisonous headcrabs from Half-Life 2;

The Brute has the strangest sounds in the game. Some shouts can be heard as “Don’t shoot me!” (“Don’t shoot!”);

In the picture for the "Meat Hammer" achievement, the Brute's mutated hands are reversed;

While the artists were deciding on the appearance of the Brute, he was running around in a modified model of the Hunter.

spittoon

The Spitter, referred to by the Survivors as the "long-necked thing", can be identified by its characteristic dry, hacking cough, after which it spits out what looks like a lump of mutated stomach acid, which, upon falling to the ground, turns into a large acidic puddle. The damage from it increases every second. The same puddle of acid pours out from the body of the killed Spitter, but smaller in size.

Any Survivor who falls into an acid puddle begins to lose health, which forces him to leave the area. Which, naturally, plays into the hands of the Infected - Survivors can no longer set up barricades in some narrow passages or remote rooms. The Spitter is often compared to the Fat Man, because... both are more of a combat support than an attacking unit. Unlike the Fat Man, her secretions (a lump of acid) bounce off the walls, which can help the Infected reach deep-seated opponents.

It was previously discussed that Spitter is the female version of Fatman. Under the influence of the virus, the neck lengthened, and the stomach began to produce acid, which, in turn, replaced the hormones that attract ordinary infected people. But this version was rejected after videos of the Fat Woman appeared;

Spitter is the first playable female character;

The acid does not harm other Infected.;

It is possible that Spitter's abilities stem from a mutated form of heartburn;

In the first part of the game, in the hospital, one of the x-rays shows an elongated neck. It is possible that this patient was infected with the Spittoon virus.

Jockey

Jockey is a small Infected hunchback that jumps on the back of Survivors and grabs them by the head. The virus turned Jockey into a creature with highly developed muscles in the back and neck, forcing him to move like a spider monkey. This is also facilitated by the increased length of the fingers and toes. Stretched lips and facial skin tightly tighten the skull. He is wearing a white T-shirt and blue boxer shorts. While running, he makes an inarticulate muttering sound similar to a monkey's cry, which turns into hysterical laughter when jumping on the Survivor.

The Jockey can jump long distances, but not as far as the Hunter. While on the Survivor, he can direct it in any direction. Jockey's damage is small. The player can resist weakly, slowing down their movement. Valve mentioned that the Jockey works best in tandem with the Spitter, guiding Survivors into the acid. In the same way, you can force the Survivor to go into the fire or confront the Witch.

This is the first Infected who can detach from the Survivor at any time;

In the early stages of development, the Jockey was dressed in a brightly colored tank top;

The jockey was the first to be shown in the gameplay video;

Jockey is currently the smallest of the Infected;

Jockey is similar in many ways to "Fleaman" from the Castlevania video game series. Both are small, both jump like a monkey, and both can control players;

A player attacked by a Jockey sees a green light around them. Most likely, this is a clue to the possibility of resistance.

Wandering Witch

During the daytime, Survivors can encounter the Wandering Witch (also known as the Walking Witch or Day Witch), who attacks in the same way as in the first part, but instead of sitting and waiting for some curious Survivor to shine a light in her face with a flashlight, she wanders around the neighborhood. The sunlight has affected the Witch's body in a strange way and she is no longer in pain, allowing her to walk around the area. However, she can be recognized by the characteristic sound of quiet sobs and new music. There is an opinion that the Witch is simply trying to find a dark place, because... her eyes are closed. This explains why she attacks the Survivors with flashlights. The Wandering Witch is difficult to avoid, forcing new Survivors to take extreme measures. It is possible that the Survivors from the first part were aware of this behavior and therefore traveled at night.

When confronted with a Survivor, the Witch spreads her arms to the sides and, after a couple of seconds, rushes at him. It looks like the Witch needs to deal some damage before she can attack the marksman. She reacts to several pistol shots with a loud cry, after which she calms down and continues on her way. After sunset, the Wandering Witch sits down again and begins to weep as she waits for the Survivors. At night, the Witch in Left 4 Dead 2 is much less aggressive, even compared to the first part of the game. The player can calmly stand next to the Witch until he shines a flashlight on her.

According to Game Informer Magazine, the player can easily separate the Witch's head from the torso with one blow of an ax or katana, aiming for the back of the head.

The Witch and the Hunter are the only ones not shown in the Zombie Survival Guide trailer;

Based on an interview with Chet Falitzek, the Witch apparently likes the smell of sugar, which explains the large number of Witches in the Heavy Rain campaign.

For the first time information about Left 4 Dead appeared in the magazine's Christmas issue PC Gamer UK for 2006 in the form of a six-page article. And the public was able to try out the game at QuakeCon 2007 And Showdown 2007 LAN, held in the American city of San Jose. November 6 demo Left 4 Dead became available to those who pre-ordered through the digital distribution system Steam. On November 11, 2008, it became publicly available. On November 18, the game became available through Steam For everyone. On November 20, the boxed versions were released in America, and on November 21 - in the Old World. Versions for personal computer and Xbox 360 fully translated into Russian.

The game received many positive reviews. The developers managed to convey well the gloomy atmosphere of horror and despair that arose as a result of the spread of an unknown virus in the game universe that turned people into monsters. Thanks to the work of the “Director,” an artificial intelligence that monitors the actions of players and influences the gameplay, each playthrough of the game is unique and inimitable, and the emphasis on team actions makes the game one of the best among cooperative shooters. Also unique to this series of shooters is the unusual network mode, in which opposing teams are placed in different conditions: some play as humans, while others play as Special Infected.

Single player game

Although the game is designed for multiplayer play, a single-player mode is possible where the remaining Survivors are controlled by the computer. Bots follow the human player, shoot the Infected, heal, save and help other Survivors, but cannot open shelter doors, initiate “panic events” and call the Horde, or use thrown weapons due to strategic importance and impossibility tactical use these elements artificial intelligence. In fact, this mode is a complete copy of the Co-op with the only difference - it is played by one person, other players cannot join. When the human player dies, the game ends. Getting to know Left 4 Dead you should start with this mode, especially since this is the only mode that does not require an Internet connection or local network.

Battle

In this mode, four players take on the role of Survivors, while the other four take on the role of Special Infected. Each team must have at least one person to begin with, missing players on the Survivor team are replaced by bots. Each player on the Infected team is given control of one of the Special Infected: Fat Man, Hunter or Smoker. An Infected team cannot have more than one Fat Man or Smoker, but there can be up to four Hunters. From time to time, the Infected team is given a Tank, which is usually controlled by the Infected player who currently has the most points. The witch as a game character is inaccessible; she is always controlled by artificial intelligence. Some time after death, the Special Infected appears again, and the player can choose where to appear in the “ghost” mode. A prerequisite for this is to choose a position in which he is not in the area of potential visibility of the Survivors. In “ghost” mode, the Infected player is invisible to Survivors, but appears as a white silhouette to other Infected. It also moves at significantly increased speed. In Battle mode, a killed Survivor is not reborn, but waits until the end of the round. After the end of each round, Survivors are awarded points depending on the average distance traveled, the number of people who reached the shelter, health points of the survivors and the difficulty of the campaign round, and additional points are given for saved first aid kits and pills. After completing the map, the teams change places. The team that has scored the most points based on the total of the previous rounds plays first as the Survivors, and the losers play as the Infected. After the teams complete the campaign, a table with team scores will be shown and the winning team will be determined.

Survival

The Survival mode repeats individual episodes from the Co-op mode - “panic events”, when the Survivors, in order to move forward, have to repel the attack of the Horde of the Infected - a large group of several dozen zombies, including one or more Special Infected. The Survival mode is distinguished by the fact that the advance of the Infected on its maps (representing limited areas of the maps of a particular campaign) will never stop - the Director creates more and more new hordes of the Infected, the density and number of opponents far exceeding those with which the players had to deal in Co-op mode; There are also many more Special Infected, they can appear in pairs and triplets, including those of the same type. The start of the attack is determined by the players themselves - at the start the map is safe, and the Infected do not appear on it until the Survivors trigger a panic event. Until this moment, they can prepare for defense by arming themselves, taking advantageous defensive positions and placing exploding canisters and gas cylinders around the map. It is impossible to win in Survival mode; the goal of the players is to stay alive as long as possible. If the team manages to hold out certain time, she receives a medal. Four minutes - a bronze medal, seven minutes - a silver medal, ten minutes - a gold medal.

Plot

The United States of America is gripped by an epidemic of an unknown virus that causes symptoms of rabies in people infected with it (called Infected), followed by body mutations, turning some of them into terrible monsters. Within two weeks, the epidemic spread to several states, and the authorities took extreme measures, starting mass evacuations from infected areas. The four main characters (called the Survivors) did not have time to evacuate with the others and are now trying to escape from being surrounded by hordes of infected people.

The game consists of six campaigns, divided into several levels each and interconnected by a common storyline, and one independent mission for the Survival mode:

  • "No Mercy" (eng. No Mercy)
Tagline - "Curring the Infection...One Bullet at a Time"(“We treat the infection... One bullet - one patient”).

After the introductory video, in which the four main characters run away from hordes of infected, they find themselves on the roof of a dilapidated residential building in big city Fairfield. Having heard from a passing helicopter about an evacuation point located on the roof of the Mercy Hospital, they go there. Having reached the helipad on the roof of the hospital, they call rescuers on the radio and fly away from there on a helicopter that arrives.

  • "Fatal Flight" (eng. Crash Course)
Tagline - "Crashing will be the easiest thing they do today"(“Disaster is the most ordinary thing they will have to do today”).

The pilot of the helicopter on which the survivors flew away turns out to be infected, and Zoey has to shoot him. The helicopter crashes, but the four heroes manage to survive the fall. They go in search of transport and find a minibus in one of the garages, in which they safely leave the city.

  • "Death Toll"
Tagline - “Hell came to Earth. These four are gonna send it back"(“Hell has come to earth. These four are ready to send it back”).

Soon the survivors have to change their vehicle to a police car, but when they find themselves at a destroyed bridge, they abandon it too. Having reached the small coastal town of Riverside on foot, they radio the captain of a fishing boat, who picks them up.

  • "Death in the Air" (eng. Dead Air)
Tagline - “Their flight just got delayed. Permanently"(“Their flight is delayed. Forever”).

Having covered part of the journey by boat, the Survivors disembark at the port of Newburgh and spend the night in the first building they come across. At dawn, a smoking plane flies over them. They go to the airport in search of transport, find a plane with a pilot, fill the tanks with fuel and fly away from there.

  • "Bloody Harvest"
Tagline - "No hope." No cure. No problem"(“No hope. No healing. No problems”).

It is unknown what happened to the plane, but the Survivors find themselves in the forest. They head to the nearest evacuation point, located on an old farm. There they radio the military, and an XA-180 armored personnel carrier arrives to pick them up and takes them to a military base.

  • "The Sacrifice"
Tagline - "It's Your Funeral"(“This is your funeral”)

The campaign tells the story of what happened to the survivors after the events of the Bloody Harvest campaign and shortly before the events of the Passage campaign from Left 4 Dead 2 .

  • "Last Frontier" (eng. Last Stand)
Tagline - "It doesn't end well"(“This will not end well”).

Map for Survival mode, four heroes defend at a lighthouse.

Main characters

The game has 4 main characters, called Survivors: Bill, Francis, Zoey and Louis.

  • William Overbeck or simply Bill(English Bill) - an old veteran of the Vietnam War, an experienced soldier. Served in the US Army Special Forces. It is known that he knew Francis before the events of the game. After the outbreak of the epidemic, Bill has to fight the enemy again. However, he admits that even in war he was not used to this. Dies during the campaign events The Sacrifice, as he sacrificed himself for the sake of the remaining three survivors in order to raise the bridge. Bill's appearance is copied from Bernard Fouquet, and he is voiced by Jim French (in the localization from Akella - Valery Storozhik).
  • Francis (English Francis) is a strong and strong-willed biker, covered with tattoos. Francis' date of birth is known; it is tattooed on his left hand - June 29, 1973. According to him, he hates almost everything in the world. Francis' appearance is copied from Taylor Knox, and he is voiced by Vince Valenzuela (localized from Akella by Vsevolod Kuznetsov).
  • Zoey (English: Zoey, pronounced Zoey) is an attractive girl who comes from a wealthy family. Knows how to handle firearms. During her freshman year of college, she binge-watched old horror films. As shown in the comic book Sacrifice, Zoey watched both of her parents die. Zoya's appearance is copied from Sonja Kinski, daughter of the famous German actress Nastassja Kinski. She is voiced by Jen Taylor (localized by Akella - Olga Zvereva).
  • Louis (eng. Louis) - a junior systems analyst in the information technology department, was about to quit when the virus appeared. Louis is in many ways similar to Ben, one of the main characters in the film Night of the Living Dead. Louis is dressed like Sean from the movie “Sean of the Dead.” His clothing, as well as small details such as signature boots, a tie, and an expensive watch, not only set him apart from the other members of the team, but also give players an idea of who Louis was before the disaster. Louis' appearance was copied from Sean Bennett, and he is voiced by Earl Alexander (localized from Akella by Vladislav Kopp).

Infected

In the game there are both ordinary infected - people who have been slightly exposed to the virus, and special infected - heavily mutated. There are several types of special infected in the game, each of which has special qualities: for example, the Hunter can jump high and far, and the Smoker can attract victims with his long tongue.

Achievement system

IN Left 4 Dead, like in other games Valve, beginning with The Orange Box, there is a built-in achievement system, which consists of completing a number of minor tasks and overcoming certain plot twists. Earned achievements do not provide any advantages during the passage; they are only marked in the game menu and network statistics Valve. At the time of the game's release, there were 51 achievements, later their number increased to 73.
