Tales of. The Elusive Avenger. Review of Tales of Berseria. Revenge is a dish served cold

In the series Tales from the studio Bandai Namco more than a dozen projects, but only in Tales of Berseria they decided to tell adult story: about the world where bright side not much different from the dark one, and you are not a knight in shining armor, but a cruel avenger who will stop at nothing.

Revenge is a dish served cold

Although Tales of Berseria has become one of the most dark games in the Tales series, she is also the most human. This is a story about betrayal, revenge, humanism and the triumph of will. And it does not invite the player into the faceless world of jRPG, divorced from reality - the fabulous Tales of Berseria is full of sincere and realistic emotions.

Once upon a time, the main character Velvet lived peacefully in a remote village with her younger brother. All over the country, pockets of a demonic plague formed, turning people into bestial, bloodthirsty monsters, but the villagers knew no fear: they were protected by Artorius, a talented exorcist magician and part-time guardian of Velvet. However, as in many similar stories, great talent led to great trouble: the heroine’s younger brother died during an overly ambitious experiment by Artorius, and Velvet’s world became a nightmare.

The main character's torn clothes symbolize her infection by a demon.

From a kind girl, the main character turned into a goddess of vengeance - cruel, pragmatic and capable of going over her head not in the name of the common good, but for the sake of her own interests. This character is not typical for the protagonists of the Tales series, but, as it turned out, it benefited the game.

Perhaps the most valuable thing about Tales of Berseria is its amazing characters. The plot “accelerates” for quite a long time, and you will spend the first two hours in splendid isolation, but then a motley company will begin to gather around. The demon swordsman Rokuro is full of mysteries: he constantly carries a sword with him, but does not use it for personal reasons, which we will still learn about. The chaotic, but extremely cheerful witch Mejilu amazes with her expressiveness and constantly drags the heroes into funny squabbles. But Aizen, on the contrary, is surprisingly smart, collected and serious - and you can’t say that he’s a pirate.

Each of Velvet's companions is a real person with their own character and skeletons in the closet, which may not be so easy to get to. And, importantly, they, like the main character, do not look like stereotypical RPG characters.

Mejilu is one of the most charismatic and fun-loving heroines in the entire Tales series.

They are not the most good people: You will meet half of them either in prison or during a robbery. But it is thanks to your party members that a certain unanimity of pragmatists will reign in your company, not burdened by unnecessary moral principles. I am especially pleased with the high quality of dialogues and remarks - it is thanks to them that you feel like part of a real team, where human relations cannot be described in a few words.

When the end justifies the means

Combat in Tales of Berseria takes place in real time on a small battlefield within which you can move, attack, and dodge attacks. Everything happens much more dynamically than in previous parts of the series.

The battle mechanics are based on the "soul scale", which in practice represents action points. They are spent on attacks and restored in seconds of inactivity. Once you deplete them, Velvet's damage will drop sharply and she will open up, becoming vulnerable. In addition to the usual techniques, the main character has the “Soul Split” skill: with its help, she inflicts crushing damage on the enemy with her demonic abilities. Naturally, at the expense of spending a large number of soul points.

Velvet uses her demonic hand in rare cases, preferring to kill enemies with a regular blade.

In addition, you can customize combinations of attacks in detail, because as you progress, more and more new techniques will appear in your arsenal, which will make beautiful combos. You can, for example, combine long-range fire attacks with sword strikes or other powerful spells.

But even with a large number of methods of killing Tales walkthrough of Berseria will not seem like an easy walk: you will have to adapt to each enemy and study its strengths and weaknesses during the battle. The fights in the game are very fast and intense, which sometimes even confuses you. But there is also a drawback: the types of those who will have to be killed are an order of magnitude smaller than the methods for killing. Substantial part the game will take place for the destruction of monotonous crowds of beastmen and representatives of the meager local fauna.

We start with skirmishes with ordinary boars, but quickly move on to dragons.

This might not seem so significant if it weren't for the tons of boring dungeons you have to go through. Clearing dull caves and several dozen plains will take more than one hour of your time: you are looking for loot, exploring locations and trying to gain strength before the battle with the next boss.

Bosses, fortunately, add variety to this process. Not only can they bring the heat in battle, but they also don’t look like a series of meaningless villains - each one exudes individuality.

Bosses, although sometimes seeming like “gentlemen,” are always ready to stab you in the back.

In addition to standard battles, Tales of Berseria has several interesting mechanics that make the game more voluminous. For example, in certain moment you will get a ship that you can send on missions of robbery and exploration. The game world is a huge archipelago with islands in a wide range of climate zones: from snowy tundra to tropical paradise. And you and your team will have to visit almost every one: they will let you sunbathe and freeze. All this is reminiscent of a journey from One Piece- only instead of a team of fair and kind heroes, there are realistically ruthless pirates.

However, the creators of Tales of Berseria did not draw a black-and-white “dichotomy of good and evil,” so on the conventional side of good we see no less ambiguous characters. The Order of Exorcists, which protects the world from the demonic plague, is in fact rotten to the core, and in this light, Velvet’s actions no longer seem so monstrous. And there’s nothing to say about the nobility of the local aristocracy - they despise the people so much. The overall plot only benefits from these contradictions.

The devil is in the details

But in visual design there are no deviations from standards Japanese games: the quite “anime” main character wears classic armored bras (except that her style is darker). You can complement her image with the help of cosmetic little things that come across here and there in the game.

There are a lot of funny things: for example, there are balls with the souls of local miracle cats lying all over the archipelago. With their help, you can open chests in which, like genies, these same seals are imprisoned. If you're lucky, after liberation they will give you the loot you need - but they can also behave much less friendly.

Some of the local cats walk on their hind legs and talk. And that's not all the surprises.

An important advantage of the game, which will certainly affect sales, is greater loyalty to newcomers. Although the game takes place in the same world as the previous one Tales of Zestiria, to understand the plot you do not need any special knowledge from the previous parts.

Long battles to the last drop of blood can also be avoided. We choose the most easy level complexity - and not a single battle is a problem anymore. You will have to pay for this with less loot and experience, but in the case of a “lazy” passage you will not need them. But on high difficulty, fights will become a real snag even for experienced players.

Tales of Berseria also did a good job with the architecture - the cities are interesting to look at.

Many JRPGs are quite specific. Not all fans of traditional Western role-playing games are ready to adapt to the Japanese standards of the genre, and the games themselves often repel the mass audience with the abundance of Eastern features and difficulties.

Tales of Zestiria(Tails of Zestiria) – atmospheric game project, developed in an anime style that belongs to the RPG genre. Here you have to go into an unusual and unique world, where there are a lot of fairy-tale characters, each of whom can, in one way or another, influence your progress. You find yourself in an atmosphere of war where you must become a hero. Your main task is that you must bring peace to people and do everything possible to stop hostilities as quickly as possible. You will play the role of a brave hero who will go to fight against an indestructible force. The thing is that your main enemy has hidden in the darkness, and you, in turn, need to get to him. Getting to your opponent will not be so easy; you need to overcome a number of obstacles and wipe off a huge bunch of enemies from the face of the planet, capable of doing a lot to take your life. You will be able to play surrounded by true friends who will follow you through thick and thin.
