Top 5 racing games. F1 Racing Simulator Series

From hardcore simulators to less realistic car uses, we represent the elite of racing games.

On one side of the range, we have hardcore racing simulators with control models so precise and physics so advanced that real racers use them for training. On the other side is Driver: San Francisco, a game about a comatose detective jumping between people's minds. How many other genres can come in here?

Putting together our recommendations, we prefer newer versions of realism-oriented simulators and games with official licenses, because newness means a lot here. Nevertheless, there is room here for older games with more timeless pluses, and for some classics that deserve attention for their influence and the advancement of the genre. As long as they are a) still playable and b) still fun.

Also, this list will try to balance high-fidelity simulators, "about" racing games that balance realism with accessibility, and action-oriented arcade racing. And if you want to add some extra realism, you can also check out our list of the best wheels for PC.

If you want more information from us about the most best PC games, you can also see ours, and.

Dropouts from the main list

The developer: Playground Games, Turn 10 | release date: September 2016

It was an understatement to call FH3 a racing game. " This is a huge, varied playground, where cars always have something to do.". The game brings equal pleasure from fast driving through the narrow streets of Australian cities, and from a frantic race through the lands of some farmer. It has enough settings to make you feel like a dashing arcade racer or a hardened pro of realistic simulations.

You can put on any of three hundred photorealistic cars the most idiotic vinyl you can find, or you can do the finest tuning of the suspension. The DJs will play special songs for you, to which you will turn the steering wheel like an experienced racer or a damn maniac. The list goes on and on, but best of all, you have the opportunity to create it all together with friends in a seamless co-op mode.

Our recommendation comes with a warning that Forza is not easy to launch, and the game still hasn't gotten rid of all the performance issues, but it all pales in comparison to its great. open world.

The developer: Codemasters | release date: August 2016

In our review of the game, Sam White called it “the finest, most authentic Formula 1 simulation ever made,” and praised the excellent PC port.

In fact, there is a huge list of innovations in F1 2016, with the help of which the game manages to achieve this immersive effect. From the very hand start, each race turns into an intense technical test. A new system R&D allows you to work on a specific car all season, turning it into the car of your dreams.

But the most important changes were small details like “the car slipping when accelerating too much on a corner; soft squeezing of the brake does not lead to a skid, burning blocked tires; sliding on a film of water on a track filled with monsoon - each lap becomes a happy test of taming a super-powerful beast. "

The developer: Ghost Games | release date: November 2013

Arguably the best open world racing game from EA to date. With two parallel careers as street racer and cop, and a bunch of head-banging online features, Rivals is a lot like combining Burnout: Paradise's sandbox racing style with online capabilities. Anyway, until EA shuts down the servers ...

The developer: Codemasters Southam | release date: May 2011

Rally simulator of a brutal battle between a pilot and a narrow belt of winding country road, trying to kill a stubborn man. Yes, this is Dirt 3 in all its glory. It feels faster than any other game on the list, because skidding 50mph through dirt and gravel, just inches away from a wall of Finnish birches, is not at all the same as driving a Formula 1 car through O Rouge in Spa.

The developer: Slightly Mad Studios | release date: March 2011

For a game that strives to strike a balance between realistic simulator and unbridled arcade, Shift 2 behaves completely uncompromisingly. It is a focal point of violence and barely contained power in top sports cars with an astonishing flair for aces like Senna or Nikki Lauda. Gaping, cars bustle and crouch, tires squeal when cornering, vision blurred and distorted from breakneck speed and overloads ... but, by some miracle, you manage to maintain control.

This is the illusion of Shift 2. The constant feeling of a fierce tiger behind your back ... but every time you keep the car on the road, cutting your way with claws and fangs. And thanks to skillful use camera effects, sound and gorgeous control jitter and horror never leave you until the end.

Shift 2 is in perfect balance. The game I run when I feel like wild tension and challenge to my driving skills, but I have no desire to kill myself in such tough simulations as iRacing or RaceRoom.

The developer: Criterion Games | release date: January 2008

Seven-year old man. Seven year old! For seven whole years, her countless imitators have been born. And, so far, the original surpasses them utterly, so much cleaner and more emotional. It has no licensed cars, instead it flaunts certain archetypes, so easily and ruthlessly turned into crumpled pieces of garbage. If we apply a similar model to another Criterion brainchild, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Lamborghini's lawyers would be horrified.

Paradise has no online “social” component. It's not about gathering and unlocking. Yes, you get new cars, but that's not the point of the game. The point is driving around the city and its environs, inhabited exclusively by cars, accompanied by gorgeous music tracks. Narrow winding streets, mountain roads, idyllic farms. Cruel, overwhelmingly fast-paced pleasure. The game laid the foundations for the modern arcade racing genre, but the irony is that since then, all we do is try to get back to Paradise.

The developer: Kunos Simulazioni | release date: December 2014

This game could become the world's driving. Her governance model is, without exaggeration, incredibly persuasive and complex. It has a decent career mode with an extensive set of challenges in a variety of areas. Each new stage helps the player develop the skills they need to handle the most demanding Assetto Corsa vehicles.

Outside the track, the game is somewhat primitive. Her interface in these moments is more like the software of an engineer than a game, which does not do her credit. For my taste, the list of tracks could be longer, although the situation is corrected by an impressive list of cars.

Yet the minimalism fits perfectly with Assetto Corsa: a game about driving as clean and high quality as possible. And at some point in your racing life, that will be more than enough.

The developer: Slightly Mad Studios | release date: May 2015

A game that easily falls into the "desert island" list. If I personally could take only one game from our list with me to such a link, I would not hesitate to take Project CARS.

It is gorgeous and has some of the most wonderful weather and lighting conditions I've ever seen in a racing game. It can offer you everything you want, from classic Formula 1 races to vintage cars from the seventies and modern Le Mans prototypes. Each car is unique, requires a special attitude, gives new sensations. The tracks are amazing, including lovingly and caringly little-known British tracks, and perhaps the best-ever twist in the genre's history, Corkscrew at Laguna Seca.

Project CARS requires a lot of assumptions and customizations. AI opponents are too wooden, but patches have improved their behavior. It will take you a lot of time to find the right difficulty and realism settings for you, and you shouldn't even write about the local career mode. Not the best race in existence, but, to date, the only game that captures the essence of these competitions so accurately and firmly.

The painstaking customization eventually pays off, and the enjoyment of the game begins to grow with your skills. Over time, I found that I began to gradually disable various auxiliary functions, began to delve more and more boldly into the fine settings of the car and lift up the complexity of the AI.

Project CARS is inferior to many great races, but most importantly, it is incredibly fun to drive.

The developer: Turn 10 Studios | release date: October 2017

In the review Forza Motorsport 7 we called it "so big and comprehensive that it can be played both as a stupid truck driver simulator and as a full-fledged racing game with cool sports cars." Truly one of the biggest sandbox games for car enthusiasts, it can satisfy both avid racers who just want to reach the highest speeds in sparkling metal cars and sandbox fans - and all other gamers too.

Variable weather effects transform each race into an impromptu marathon with puddle and fog obstacles. Night trails slowly illuminate with dawn, sunlight displaces impenetrable darkness - these magnificent views make game process only better. The terrible progression system, almost entirely relying on loot boxes, is pulling Forza Motorsport 7 down, but since this is the first big game in the Forza Motorsport series on PC, these shortcomings are forgivable to her.

The developer: Slightly Mad Studios | Release year: 2017

This is a racing simulator that tries to contain everything: driving on ice with studded tires near Swedish snow debris, go-karting in the Scotland mountains, rallycross in Hockenheim with mud splashing everything and everything, Le Mans prototypes rushing through Imola, indicars, overcoming gravity in Daytona Speedway ... And if you get really bored, you can try to drive Honda Civics down O Rouge without braking.

What's more surprising than the incredible variety of content in Slightly Mad's sequel to the simulator is that they've managed to put it all together. Riding on a loose surface feels as authentic as racing on a track in a regular car, not to mention the incredible recoil accuracy that is transferred to your hands when you try to hit another car.

During development, several riders from various disciplines were brought in for consultation, and it really shows. An esports scene has already formed around Project CARS 2, and the depth of simulation here is such that for young riders it can really be a suitable substitute for real-track time.

The developer: Codemasters | Release year: 2019

The first Dirt Rally came as a revelation in 2015, when it moved away from snapback caps and energy advertisements (which in the past defined the entire Dirt series) and instead presented overwhelming challenge to - well, just trying to stay on the rally track. Dirt Rally 2 does the same thing, but now much better in all directions.

Rally is an incredibly difficult discipline, and Codemasters have the same demands on the player as a real rally car would. At least it feels like that - in fact, none of us have experience driving Citroen on the mud tracks of Finland at the same speed as Sébastien Ogier does, and never will.

But the transfer of weight in Dirt Rally cars, the feeling of that brute force as the wheels try to find traction under you, is extremely convincing.

The developer: Turn 10 Studios, Playground Games | release date: October 2018

Forza Horizon 4 still amazes us with its incredibly believable driving simulation. It is still an unrivaled racing game. A stunning blend of arcade controls and meticulous attention to detail that makes you feel the most subtle differences between yours. racing cars... It's not a perfect simulator, but the weight, speed and torque of each vehicle give it a distinctiveness that goes far beyond dry performance.

With significantly better performance with less hardware load (compared to Forza Horizon 3), intuitive multiplayer and constantly updated seasonally, Forza Horizon 4 is almost the perfect racing game. It will not be suitable for simulator enthusiasts, but anyone who is even a little interested in cars and loves to drive them should definitely try it.

The developer: iRacing Motorsport Simulations | release date: August 2008

With its online regular racing leagues and meticulously modeled cars and tracks, iRaceing is as close to real-world racing as possible on a PC. And this means that you have to work hard in it if you want to achieve something.

The game does not have any meaningful single-coil component, and a subscription and a live schedule of championships will require significant cash injections. But for some racing sim fans, iRacing simply has no competition.

The developer: Codemasters | Release year: 2018

Codemasters has done much more with its fully licensed F1 series than just conveying the behavior of the cars and the characteristics of each track. This is a chance to try yourself in the shoes of an auto-superstar and enter into rivalry, negotiating contracts, plans to improve the car and race strategy. You can think of it as an RPG in which you play as a racer. And in which the gas pedal replaces the sword by +4.

As a result of these efforts to bring you into the life of a Formula 1 racer, each victory feels a little more meaningful and each defeat more difficult because you build meaning around these events and are interested in their outcome. None of this could work so well if the underlying behavior of the machines was not so fun.

While it is more forgiving than iRacing or rFactor 2, it perfectly conveys the jerkiness and eerie levels of power of a modern Formula 1 car.

The developer: Kunos Simulazioni | Year of issue: 2019

To be very honest, the world of racing simulators was not overly intrigued by the announcement of the officially licensed game in the Blancpain World Endurance series. Motorsport licenses are more niche, but in the end it turned out that this was exactly what the Assetto Corsa franchise needed.

The 2014 Kunos Simulazioni game did a lot in this direction, developing incredibly good transmission and excellent steering support, but there was a not very structured system. single player... Well, there were a lot of rough edges.

The license gave the successor of this game a pleasant championship structure with different categories of transport and very different endurance races on the famous tracks - Paul Ricard, Spa Francorchamps and Circuit de Catalunya. The handling has reached a new peak with good steering response, and the day and night cycle has been added, which is really necessary for an endurance racing simulator.

The developer: Nadeo | release date: August 2011

TrackMania 2 is divided into three different games: Stadium, Valley, and Canyon. There is no need to collect the entire collection to enjoy the unbridled "F-Zero meets Sonic the Hedgehog" fun. And a powerful editor allows you to create endless tracks, more unimaginable than Escher's architecture. Classic arcade racing game.

The developer: Milestone | Year of issue: September 2018

In some corners of the racing community, two wheels may be considered heresy, but for anyone looking to split the usual number of wheels in half, Milestone's MotoGP simulator has a lot to offer.

Motorcycle racing is inherently exciting - lean angles, suicidal overtaking and acceleration speeds make motorcycling a great spectator sport. And the Italian superbike specialists Milestone really managed to convey that feeling of horror and courage that comes from riding a factory MotoGP motorcycle.

Codemasters' F1 games were obviously a lot of inspiration, to put it politely, but a result of that inspiration - highest level career simulations. Work your way up the slower categories, build a reputation and hold out in this big team race.

The developer: Image Space Incorporated | release date: January 2012

Still a few raw game rFactor 2 is the successor to one of the coolest PC games and one of the world's most impressive modding communities. Like its predecessor, the game continues to grow and grow after its release with new cars and tracks. Yes, not cheap, but serious riders will be pleased.

The volume of user-generated mods is huge, and while the focus has been on Formula 1 for years, those who are itchy in DTM, WTCC, GT races and more will be delighted as well.

The developer: Criterion Games | release date: November 2010

Hot Pursuit is a racing game frozen at a special time for arcade racers. The purest essence of the whole Need for Speed, until the series went into the open world. Delivers strictly what its name says, race after race, no slowing down. Enjoy life, driving along the European exotic and the unforgettable Pacific coastline with a whole motorcade of police cars behind.

The roadside textures and number of cars can't compete directly with the newer parts, but the overall Hot Pursuit aesthetic still looks luxurious. And above all, quickly.

The developer: Amistech Games | Year of issue: 2016

At least half of your time in My Summer Car is spent outside the car. In fact, it is as much a car mechanic and teenage simulator in rural Finland in the nineties as a racing simulator itself. However, the game made it onto this list anyway, because for anyone interested in cars, it's a very interesting experience.

It all starts with a note from your parents that says you have to get the old broken car repaired in your garage. After that, you build a real handling vehicle with room for improvement down to the smallest bolts and nuts, during which you learn what the exhaust manifold looks like and what happens when it starts rattling on a single lane road by the lake at 70 mph. ...

Owning a car in racing has never been more enjoyable and personal than in this slightly weird but beautiful driving simulator.

The developer: Microprose | Year of issue: 2000

Revered for decades and still playable in 2019, Grand Prix 3 was a turning point in racing. Jeff Crammond's Microprose already made a splash with their Formula One Grand Prix and Grand Prix 2 in the early nineties, but tight technical constraints didn't allow the simulation to work out enough.

Grand Prix 3 got on new level transmission of accuracy. She modeled things like tire wear, wet-weather friction changes, and fine tweaks — things that had previously only been simulated at a very basic level. Simply put, then it really felt like you climbed into a real Formula 1 car.

If you look back at this playable museum piece, you will notice that she also decided to convey the sensation of sports at the right time, because it was then that legends like Schumacher and Hakkinen fought for the first places, and previous champions Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve prevailed at the very end. Also, the game has been modified by the most I can’t in 19 years of its existence, so if you google it well, you can go through the same almost 20 years of Formula 1 history.

The developer: Sector3 Studios | release date: February 2013

A descendant of the once mighty racing empire of the SimBin studio. Think of it as GTR Online: the most ruthlessly realistic simulation game you can imagine, tailored for free-to-play online.

But this is also his weakness. As soon as you put the car on the track, everything becomes fabulously cool and familiar, but outside the track, RaceRoom revolves around to sell you an extra piece of the game. Do not hesitate, buy in sets: this will provide you with all the cars and tracks at once, from which it is only a pleasure.

The developer: Codemasters | release date: June 2014

The most simple game from Codemasters, which simply has the lowest entry threshold. The car's handling is forgiving almost all the mistakes of an inexperienced pilot, but at the same time, it is obstinate enough to teach the player the basics of cornering and control of power. It features full-fledged racing events, powerful AI opponents, and tons of different racing formats.

A great opportunity to get involved for people who are just starting to get interested in racing simulators, and a lot of fun for more advanced pilots looking to relax.

The developer: Ubisoft Reflections | release date: September 2011

With one of the best soundtracks in games (70s!) And a truly original twist on, Driver: SF literally exudes style and coolness that the rest of the games on this list are very, very far from.

The ability to "switch" between NPC machines at will makes Driver: SF the only game post-Paradise period, which managed to create something new and fresh with the freedom granted in the "sandbox".

The developer: Black Rock Studio | release date: May 2010

Welcome to the Michael Bay Motorized Show, where fake sports cars rocket through desolate urban wastelands, while their pilots accumulate energy to drop helicopter bombs, drive construction cranes crazy or even blow a city block to hell.

The perfect arcade race, the essence of which is car chaos and an ever-growing degree of bloodless mechanical madness.

The developer: Criterion | Year of issue: 2018

Races are rarely reissued. Big franchises release games so often that it doesn't make much sense, but in the case of Burnout Paradise, everyone was happy to see an exception to the rule. For ten years nothing like her came out.

The original still trumps copycats. It is much cleaner and more addictive than all the games it inspired. Burnout doesn't have any licensed machines, instead it provides some archetypes that crumple in horrific accidents.

Suffice it to compare this with minor accidents in Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2012), after which you fly out. It was Criterion's attempt to bypass itself, and this is where it feels like even showing a broken headlight could be followed by hundreds of meetings with Lamborghini lawyers.

Paradise is not online and "social". This game is not about collecting small items and unlocking skins. You get new cars, but they are not the basis of the game. This game is about driving through a city inhabited exclusively by cars, listening to classics of road radio and pop rock as you fly through curved streets, mountains and farms. It's brutal, incredibly fast, and extremely addicting. This game created the whole genre of arcade racing, but our trouble is that all that was done after it was trying to get back to Paradise.

In the past year, fans of racing games did not have to complain - we saw several cool new products, and worthy continuation of well-known projects. Among them were realistic car driving simulators, and funny arcade races for fun.

For all fans of speed, drive and cool customizable cars - this is a selection of the best races of 2017 and anticipated 2018.

Race Driver: Grid

Sitting behind the wheel in this game, you will understand that everything is not so simple - this is not another arcade "masterpiece" in which you will have to press two buttons and rejoice in victory. The developers tried to strike a balance between fun driving and realistic controls - mostly it worked out well, although sometimes we would like more simplicity. Overall, the game deserves a place in the collection of the best races.

Race Driver: Grid System Requirements:

- Video card GeForce 6800 / Radeon X1300 or better;

It just so happened that in addition to realism in management, players sometimes also want to fool around. In this game, in addition to pleasant and convenient controls, you will also find the same pleasant graphics, as well as the ability to smash almost the entire track along with opponents, and this can be done very entertainingly. Down with the usual dull driving!

- Video card GeForce GTX 680;
- 8 GB of RAM;
- 50 GB of free disk space;
- Operating system Windows 10.

Flat out 2

Perhaps the most the best part- it doesn't matter that the cars do not drive in places as intended by the laws of physics, it doesn't matter that the graphics are not so outrageous. What matters is that you have fun - destruction, good musical accompaniment, an interesting campaign, pumping cars, and if you get tired of driving in a circle, then you can indulge in a test mode in which you make fun of the driver flying out through the windshield.

System requirements for Flat Out 2:

- Processor Intel Pentium 4 2.0 GHz / AMD Athlon XP 2000+;

It will be cheaper, easier and, most importantly, much safer for health. But almost as interesting and even fun.

Meanwhile, over the years of creating car simulators, a huge number of races have been created.

In order to at least roughly decide on the best of them, it is worth compiling a small rating - the top 10 games that have been played and continue to be played by gamers in all countries of the world.

This will take into account both online versions of racing - the most popular genre at the present time, and traditional options that do not require an Internet connection.

1st place. Need for Speed: Most Wanted

Despite the fact that more than 10 years have passed since the release of the game, it is consistently included in the ratings, where the best races are considered.

Many gamers are returning to NFS: Most Wanted even after the release of new parts of this famous racing series.

After all, it was here that the main task was not just to win races, but also to defeat such serious rivals as the police, overtaking them and even going to ram.

Moreover, the more important the race, the more serious the police cars are.

5th place. Need for Speed: The Run

The representative of the classic NFS series also belongs to the games that do not require the Internet, and is perfect for those gamers who prefer to go through the tracks, competing only with the computer.

However, since the game is still modern, it was not without a multiplayer mode.

At the same time, even playing alone will not leave you alone on the track - about 200 cars are participating in the competition.

During the race, the player will have to overcome a huge distance, driving through all the States - from San Francisco to New York.

And the cardinal difference from all previous NFS is the ability of the player to get out of the car, which makes the game a bit like the GTA series.

Need for Speed: The Run, Race Across America

6th place. Track mania 2

Track Mania 2 project is listed best simulators for the opportunity to participate in one race of up to 200 cars.

And also for its immense popularity, since today more than 3 million people play in various parts of this series.

Moreover, the game is completely free.

Thanks to the ManiaScript programming language specially created for "Trekmania", the user can create his own track in the editor, on which other players will also ride.

Due to this, the number of tracks is constantly increasing.

Attention! It is Track Mania 2 that allows you not only to drive a racing car, but also to do it along your own chosen route - or to evaluate the creative abilities of your friends.

TrackMania 2 - a project for creative players

7th place. Driver: San Francisco

The development of the plot in the game Driver: San Francisco makes it look like a science fiction film and at the same time a race for survival.

During its passage, you have to play as a bandit who, due to being in a car accident, received a superpower - the transmigration of the soul into the body of any motorist.

Thanks to this, the player can control all cars, except for the transport of rivals.

The meaning of the race is the destruction of all opponents. And the main advantage over most other races is the huge length of roads and the absence of restrictions on movement.

In addition, you can ride here in all types of cars - from sports sedans to heavy trucks.

Soul Migration Race Driver: San Francisco

8th place. Flat out 2

Flat Out 2, a sequel to more old version, released a few years ago. But it is popular in our time.

Few in any other race on the PC can find the same drive and the ability to understand the opponent.

Naturally, the point of competition is not only to overtake competitors, but to stay alive to the end.

A game for crazy "racers": Flat Out 2

9th place. Test Drive: Unlimited 2

Popularity of the game Test Drive: Unlimited 2 provided three benefits:

  • Huge map for offline play;
  • Lack of a strict plot, requiring the mandatory performance of some actions and the passage of missions;
  • Changes in weather conditions and their effect on vehicle handling.

However, when a player needs money to buy a new car, he still has to take part in races. However, where and in what to participate, he decides for himself.
