If we talk directly about the gameplay, then it won’t be difficult to understand it as hardened veterans who have skated tens of thousands of battles in the original World of Tanks, and for those who understand practically nothing either about tanks or video games. For beginners, there is a short interactive “tutorial” that talks about the basics of tank management, as well as extremely informative and visual diagrams that appear while loading battles and explain the intricacies of certain game moments. Compared to PC version World of Tanks, which for a long time did not have even the rudiments of any training, and throws green novices into battle without any preparation, the console version already in beta test looks quite humane and friendly.

The battles themselves have not undergone virtually any changes, except that the speed of the cars was slightly increased (especially at the initial levels) for the sake of a more arcade feel. On this moment Players have access to a limited number of maps and only one mode, in which two teams of a maximum of 15 people participate. As expected, the fight continues until one of the teams is completely destroyed or the flag is captured. The action taking place on the screens looks, admittedly, not bad. The quality of the picture, if it differs from what tankers are used to seeing in the PC version, is not so much that it is noticeable when playing at a distance of two or three meters from the screen. Its belonging to consoles is revealed, perhaps, by the predictably increased size of the combat interface and a not entirely convenient mini-map, which, for unknown reasons, displays not the entire battlefield, but only a small part of it. The Xbox version also has its own unique features. For example, tracers from all shells in it look “fatter” and remain visible a little longer, which is certainly convenient. And when switching to sniper mode you can admire the muzzle and hull of your own tank from the gunner’s seat, which is certainly nice.

Although the fleet is currently represented by cars from only two nations, the USA and Germany, it is regularly replenished. And if at the very beginning of the beta test the height of evolution was tanks of the sixth level, now you can upgrade tank destroyers, medium and heavy tanks to the maximum tenth level, and self-propelled guns to the maximum eighth level. To make life easier for casual gamers, all the characteristics of the cars in the hangar are made in the form of ordinary indicator strips. The longer the strip, the greater the strength of the tank, the higher the speed, stronger armor etc. Those to whom such general data means nothing can open the tab at any time the required tank and become more familiar with its tactical and technical characteristics. The process of researching and purchasing new modules has also been simplified. So, for example, you won’t be able to buy just one turret for your tank. All improvements are sold in ready-made packages containing certain modules. The more expensive such a package is, the cooler the modules are inside it. The ability to upgrade the crew is also temporarily absent. But the “light bulb” - the commander’s skill, which notifies the player that his vehicle has been discovered by the enemy, does not need to be downloaded, because Now every tank has it by default.

As for the controls and transferring them from the keyboard to the gamepad, everything turned out quite well. It’s convenient to play, and targeting weakly armored points of enemy tanks also turned out to be quite possible. Don’t forget about the auto-aim, which in the console version will most likely be more in demand by players. Vibration clearly came in handy, tearing the gamepad apart at the moment of shots and contributing to even greater immersion in game process. But whether gamers will like the model by which the game will be distributed is a big question. The developers promise that the console version World of Tanks there will be its own payment system, different from the original game. But it is already known that everyone will have the opportunity to purchase a premium account, which will increase experience and income from battles by 50%. And the presence of the so-called “gold” in the beta version clearly hints that for real money it will be possible to buy other amenities that will make the difficult life of a tanker easier. Playing on a big screen while sitting in a chair is not at all the same as playing while sitting at a table looking at a small monitor. It would seem like the same game, but it looks and feels completely different. It is clear that the banal size of the picture and the field of view have an impact here, but the main thing is still control. If in the classic World of Tanks management essentially a shooter - WASD plus a mouse, then in World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition it’s more of a simulation - the left stick is responsible for moving, the right one for rotating the tower. This scheme is familiar to many tank battles and sims of the 90s, and in fact it is closer to controlling a real tank (levers!) than a keyboard and mouse.

In fact, “riding” on the gamepad is very comfortable. The developers moved the camera a little closer to the tank and lowered it. By and large, this is a full-fledged third-person view that turns into FPS when you zoom in on the sight. The controls are very natural and comfortable, you get used to it in just a couple of fights. But there are several nuances.





If you play a tank destroyer, medium or heavy tank– the speed of movement and rotation of the tower is small, you will not experience any discomfort from switching from a mouse/keyboard to a gamepad. The same applies to “art” - there is no difference at all in the aiming mode. But if your favorite vehicle is light tanks, there may be problems. Gamepad inertia, input lag, TV lag, and high turret rotation speed seriously complicate aiming. That is, it will be possible to work as a “firefly”, but it will be difficult, although not impossible, to cause damage to even clumsy howitzers; with competent tactics, such control features can be leveled out.

Aiming itself in World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition has also been simplified a little. Unlike the PC version, where when aimed, the silhouette of the enemy tank is simply highlighted, here the sight also changes its color, showing the base chance of penetrating armor. White – by, yellow – 0%, orange – 50%, red – 100%. But this is only a basic chance; damage can be done even with a yellow sight.





Another nuance that is worth considering is the long loading time of the game on the Xbox 360, which seems to be affected by the peculiarities of the console’s architecture and large size game levels. Although there is a delay of a couple of seconds when loading the research, store, hangar, etc. tabs. But when loading levels, everything is much worse - you can watch the gear for 30-50 seconds. Moreover, we would attribute this problem to the characteristics of the specific console at our disposal, if not for the large number of Let’s play videos with exactly the same long loading times. Waiting is boring and tedious, but the problem is not this, but the fact that you may well appear on the battlefield when all your teammates have already entered into battle with the enemy. This means that you will have to catch up, lose your advantage, etc. This especially causes a lot of trouble for the same fans of light tanks, as if inertial control wasn’t enough for them. Appearing late means that you will no longer be able to complete the main task of the “firefly” in this battle - the collision has begun, the “lighting” has begun. We really hope that the developers will fix this glitch in the next patch, otherwise light tanks in World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition can be given up.

Technologically, Despair Engine is inferior to BigWorld Technology, especially after the change in the last render. By the way, according to rumors, another graphics update is planned for the PC version. As a result, World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition is visually inferior to the Windows version of the game, especially in terms of special effects, shading, and shaders. This is not surprising, given the difference in performance between a modern PC and the Xbox 360. However, in general, the graphics look quite organic and holistic. The explosions are good, the tank models are quite up to par. Again, it’s worth considering that when playing on a console you sit further from the TV and many things, such as anti-aliasing, are not so critical.





Some simplifications appeared in World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition and in the non-combat part. So in the game there are no crews at all, and new guns and engines will have to be installed not individually, but in unique packages corresponding to tank modifications. Personally, I miss the advanced statistics in the console version, but, in the end, they can be viewed on the game’s website. In general, the hangar interface, optimized for a gamepad, turned out to be convenient and understandable, although the procedure for selling a tank and changing packages was not the most obvious. All the nuances of purchasing game gold, transferring experience, purchasing premium, premium tanks, etc. remained unchanged. Plus, items for Xbox Live avatars have been added.

The economy has not changed either. At low levels you can fight for your own pleasure, upgrade your tanks, and open new ones. At high levels without gold status, you will work at a loss, so you will either have to get yourself a premium tank to earn money, or grind. That is, we still have the same World of Tanks.





Currently, the game features the entire German and American line of tanks, plus part of the English one. The authors set themselves the introduction of Soviet technology as one of their primary tasks. If we talk about maps, most of them migrated from the PC version of the game, having undergone minimal changes, but some familiar maps are missing, although there are a couple of new ones. Plus, the game has not yet implemented daily tasks, clan wars, etc. Obviously, all this will be introduced in subsequent patches. In general, the procedure for frequently updating games is also something new for Microsoft; more recently, the release of patches for console games turned into a bureaucratic quest that was insurmountable for many companies.

World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition, essentially the first Free-to-Play project for the Xbox 360, already has quite a lot of players. Of course, there are not thousands of tankers queuing up for battle, as in the PC version, but hundreds, but you won’t have to wait longer than 15 seconds for the selection of teams.

We can say that World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition is a very high-quality and most accurate port on the Xbox 360 of the popular tank MMO-action. There are still some nuances of control and console architecture, but they are not very critical and, hopefully, will be corrected in the near future. Although we will not predict the same wide popularity in our country for the console version of the game. Wargaming's expansion continues. After the announcement of World of Tanks for mobile devices (with the subtitle Blitz), it became known about the release of WoT for the Xbox 360. Why this particular console is, in principle, an easily explained question. The console has a huge audience and excellent sales; it does best in the European and American markets. While people were languishing in anticipation of World of Warplanes, which was released just a couple of days ago, we were hard at work testing out tanks on the Xbox 360, and now we’ll tell you about them.

At first glance, WoT: Xbox 360 Edition is the same World of Tanks that we know well, but now on a console. This means excellent control, no lag, and most importantly, the ability to play on a big screen. When switching to the “boxed” version, you will not feel any inconvenience - everything is the same as before, only the interface has been slightly redesigned. And outwardly the game seemed to have gotten prettier, although the developers didn’t seem to talk about it. But how beautiful the lighting is, how great the sides of the tanks shine under the sun, how beautiful the vegetation is! The heat from the burning cars can be felt almost physically. It seems that the game somehow magically looks better than on the computer. There are no problems with stability. There is still a lot of time before the project is released, but World of Tanks is already running great on Xbox 360. WoT can almost be run on a Commodore 64, optimization of the PC version on high level. But here the developers only had to adapt to one configuration, which they did very well. There are only problems with the network part - sometimes it drops from the servers, sometimes the wait for the session to start is suspiciously long. Of course, we attribute the shortcomings to the early beta version; everything will probably be corrected by release.


The game model, of course, has not changed - shareware. However, there is a small catch. As you know, the multiplayer part of any game for Xbox 360 is only available with a paid Live Gold account. The same applies to WoT, but with an important caveat: for two weeks you can play completely free with a basic Live Silver account. There is currently only one type of match (“Standard Battle”): the confrontation continues either until the enemy base is captured or destroyed last tank enemy. The number of players has not changed compared to World of Tanks for personal computers - 15 to 15 people. Now, at the early beta stage, so many tankers rarely gather, and it is difficult to fully evaluate the optimization. But battles involving 8-10 tanks on each side go well, without a hint of lag in frames per second.


Currently, only two sides to the conflict are represented - the USA and Germany; it is proposed to sort things out on three maps. The hierarchy of vehicles is the same: equipment is divided into five classes (artillery, light, medium, heavy tanks, anti-tank installations) and ten levels. There are differences in the hangar compared to the PC version. All machine parameters are displayed with scales. This is clearer and easier for most players than trying to understand a bunch of numbers. Those who are not satisfied with the “stripes” can open a page with detailed information about a specific tank and find out everything there. The menu for upgrading military equipment has also been redone. Upgrades are sold in ready-made packages; nothing can be improved individually. This point is highly controversial. On the one hand, there are fewer problems, but on the other hand, you may not need some improvements, but you cannot refuse them. The system has not yet been finally approved; by the time of release, developers can return to the usual piece-by-piece upgrades.

The battles themselves have remained virtually unchanged. Tanks drive a little faster, matches are more dynamic and entertaining, and no one spends too much time in shelters. A light has appeared indicating enemy detection, and this option is the default on all tanks - a handy thing. Among the interesting little things is the precision aiming mode. Now we are looking from the gunner's eyes, the gun is visible from the side - but before the camera was located on the barrel itself. For winning, experience with currency is traditionally awarded; holders of a premium account are entitled to a bonus - one and a half times more credits are given.


The controls turned out to be simple. The left stick is responsible for moving the tank, the right one is for turning the turret. Aiming and other functions are intuitively remembered and after training everything seems elementary. So far, the same cannot be said about the interface. Radial menu quick messages and commands cover almost the entire screen, the mini-map does not boast of information content. Although you don’t experience any problems with such an interface. Strange - yes, uncomfortable - hardly. Naturally, these aspects will be corrected for release.

World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition is clearly aiming the gun at Western audiences. Russian-speaking players will probably be occasional guests, and in Europe and the USA, where the console market dominates, there will definitely be an audience of their own. There are still WoT players in America - with the arrival of the MMO simulator on consoles there will definitely be many more people. There is no fundamental difference between the versions for Xbox 360 and PC. They are different, but not for the better or for the worse. Some people need a scale to determine characteristics, others need exact numbers. Some people prefer to play with a joystick, others with a keyboard and mouse. It's just a matter of personal preference.
